Anyone thinking of childminding? How much????

A mum asked me the other day for some information as she was thinking of childminding. She has considered this in the past....

Gave her a telephone number. Saw her today. Ask we were chatting she mentioned it cost 4 50. I thought she meant £4.50. No she meant £450.00.

I have been childminding three years in September. It was free then!!!!

Can anyone tell me how much the process has changed. Did you pay £450?

In the past in Herts they would check on your post code and let you know if there was a demand in your area.

Love to hear from any new childminders or those going through the process now.

You get no help what so ever now if you want to set up as a childminder, well I think the pre reg course is free but thats it!

So it would be quite expensive to set up

In my area they still fund the pre-reg but that's it I think. The pre-reg costs the council £500 per person to get through it!

A few people I know have paid to go on the pre-reg course because their local authority weren't running one so they had to go to a different area.

I went on a course with the SCMA which was free and that was it. Only other things i had to pay was my fee with the CC which was £28 and my membership to the SCMA and insurance and paperwork which i think in total was around £80 or something.

£100 in hampshire, i paid it last week although inclydes first aid, safeguarding and pre reg course, ncma membership and insurance

MUM2BLESS · 04/02/2011 19:09

Thats so amazing.

Is the charges due to Government cuts or is it because people did the course then change their mind? or both?

Appreciate all your replies!!!

I registered in December (pre-reg was in September) and I paid the Ofsted reg fee/Health check and that was it.

And that was claimed back through my grant (along with NCMA insurance/membership)

Is anyone having to also do the maths and english test for those going into childminding?

The same lady has to do this also !!

are you sure she meant childminding?

I am in Herts and didn't have to pay for the pre reg or safe guarding. I already had the first aid so didn't need to pay for that although i will need to pay for a new one soon.

I do need to sit a math and English test for a level 3 qualification and pay for the level 3 but only £250 as the rest is funded

MUM2BLESS · 11/02/2011 19:20

Its definatley for childminding.

This must be something thats taking place now.

I did a maths and english test for my NVQ3 course.

I was booked on pre reg session today and got lost on the way as the road signs were rubbish, I arrived 10 minutes late, i apologised and was told I could not enter. The lady was very rude, she tapped her pen on the sign on the door and said ring this number and turned her back on me and closed the door!! I am waiting for a call back from ncma about this woman and her rudeness but now I have to wait up to 2 months to get booked on another pre reg session- all I want to do is get the ball rolling and become a childminder and this experience has been very disheartening.
Any advice or help is very welcome!!!

It's free here in South Wales still for a one hour briefing session and then a 4 week course. Just as well, I'd have no hope of setting up if it was £450!
