Please help can someone please tell me as I do my tax return on line I have to do long one so pain. But do I put wear and tear through as epense and my full gross income as income or do I take it off first then put that figure as my income?

Also if you put wear and tear as expense is it under repairs and renewals or other or something completely different as all info on net is for short return.

As long as your turnover is less than £68,000 you only have to fill in the turnover, total expenses and profit boxes. The 10% wear and tear does indeed go in the total expenses box - HMRC guidance is badly worded on this I know.

Hi mranchovy thanks for your reply only prob is when you do tax return on line you can't do short tax return so I can't just put those 3 figs in wish I could. So don't know weather to put it as a repairs and renwals cost or other cost?

If you know away I can I would love to know
Thanks

Sorry, for online version of the return I should have said as long as your turnover is less than £68,000 you only have to fill in the turnover and other expenses box (it will then work out total expenses and profit of course) - put everything in there.

If you really want to break it down, I suppose this is not strictly an expense it is an allowance in lieu of an expense so it doesn't fit in repairs and renewals rather it is.... other expenses!

jmelynch · 30/01/2011 22:23

You seem so clever I have just seen your reply on another thread to someone else.

I don't want to break it down really but it doesn't seem to give me any other option still have to fill in costs of goods travel wages rates bank charges etc. But looking at your link to short paper copy you still have to put this in anyway?

Could I be ticking wrong box at beginning I always tick option that I use contracts is that wrong?

My income is only just over £11K

Think just had brain wave are you saying to not break expenses into sperate sections i.e goods travel wages etc just stick all in other as one expense?

I am so going to request that someone sends me the paper short tax return every yr now as looks so straight forward every year I spend 3 days sorting out break down the way they want it. From way set out in ncma a/c's books

Oh thanks Blush - I'm not sure if I am clever, this is just my job!

Yes, that's what I am saying, just stick it in one box - as HMRC put it in the guidance to the full return "If your annual turnover was below £68,000, you may just enter your total expenses in box 30 (and box 45 if appropriate) rather than giving a more detailed breakdown"

Do you mean the question "... you provide your services under contracts for professional or other services and have made an entry for adjustment income in earlier returns"? Tick no to this box, it does not relate to childminding.

You may as well start again and do that - you will only have 3 boxes to fill in.

Mr anchovy, I noticed you have put alot of info on childcare web site re morg int pymts.
If you want to claim this do you have to complete a full tax rtn or can you put that expense as other?

Short tax return is OK for claiming any expense you are entitled to claim - full rules on the first page of the short return notes here in case some pedant wants to say 'that's not true if you are a farmer...' Grin

I did mine online and just had to put my income in one box and expenses all lumped together in another box.
