He is fine in himself but the poo were really watery, he has a caught so it could be cause by the mucus. What should I do ? Send him home ?? Sorry its my first mindee and I'm still really nervous.

is it really diarhoea? like sour smelling? or just runny poo because of teething?
if the first, call the parents to collect him.

NEWCHILDMINDER · 18/01/2011 09:20

Yes it is really smelling bad and it is very shinny, runny, he is not teething at the moment

To call the mum ? Even if otherwise he is fine in himself ?? thank you so much for your help, it is so difficult to make a decision !

Yes call the mum.

The HPA recommend that if there is S&D then there is a 48hr exclusion from the last bout.
This is to prevent the spread of illness. if a baby has the trots it can quickly lead to dehyrdration too! An ill child belongs at home with its parents. /you are not a nurse.
What if you and yours go down with it? You loose your income and parents loose childcare.

Of course, with very young children common sense needs to come into play.

I think calling the parents for runny poo is a tad of an overreaction to be honest.

Does he have a fever?
Is he vomiting?
Is it cantageous to other children in your care?

Babies sometime have runny poo and nothing more. And, as you say, may just be part of a cough/cold, which I wouldn't think was worthy of asking a parent to leave work and pay you anyway.

What does your sickness policy say (assuming it is in the contract)?

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 18/01/2011 10:56

I think calling the Mum is an over reaction too. See how he goes throughout the day.

As it's your first mindee (so presumably only) he's not going to make any other children unwell, nor you if you wash your hands properly.

Have you looked after babies before?

NEWCHILDMINDER · 18/01/2011 10:58

He did one watery poo at home before coming to me (I have been told when she came to pick him up) and 2 more in the space of half an hour.

My sickness policy said 48 hours exclusion from the last diohrea.

He just started with me so I dont know him that well and I dont want to take any risks.

The mum completely understood and she tought 3 watery poo in the space of 1 hour and half was a bit much.

I have 2 ds myself so yes I have looked after babies before.

I told her as none of us were sure of what was going on with the baby (he is 15 months old) to see how he is tonight and in the morning. If no more bad nappies he can come back tomorrow.

Come on 3 diahrea (sp?), it is a bit much even for a young child !!!! If it would have been the odd one I'm not saying. Yesterday everything was completely normal with him.

My DS just had a bug last week which was just diarrhoea but it was 4-6 watery poos a day but no other symptoms. Lasted a whole long week. My other DS, DH and myself all caught a much milder version - so it was definintely contagious.

He goes to day nursery and I didn't send him in as per their policies (48h from last bout).

Just saying I think you did the right thing! Whilst it wasn't 'bad' for an illness cos he was right as rain in himself, you and your other DC don't want to catch it. Plus with the risk of dehydration for the 15month old.

NEWCHILDMINDER · 18/01/2011 11:20

Oh thank you zam72, I feel bad and I know deep down I was right to call the mum even if I feel very guilty she has to miss work !

I'm a parent who has used a childminder.

If my child had done one lot at home, and then two more at the childminders, then I would want to know.

She probably dropped him off thinking that the one at home would be a one-off. The fact that it has continued, means that it may well be something more.

I think you've done the right thing in phoning her.

i had this problem yesterday.

the lo i look after full time had had bowel problems recently so a loose stool was not uncommon. he arrived yesterday all bright eyed and bushy tailed. he had his breakfast at 7.45 as usual and his daily 'consitutional' at 8.15. it was loose but nothing unusual. he fell asleep at 9.30 on the way back from the school run which sometimes happens. when he woke up at 11am he had a v.high temperature. he was not upset or in any obvious destress but i called mum immediately and she gave me permission to give him calpol and we decided that if his temperature had not gone down in 45 minutes then she would come and get him. at 12.20 his temperature had not gone down so she made arrangements to come and collect him. by the time she arrived he had no temperature but he did look peaky. last night his temperature went really high so mum took him to a & e where they said he had gastroenterisis. poor love. luckily he drinks loads so no dehydratrion.
