I am trawling my way through the dreaded accounts and tax return that a lot of us are doing at this time of years - have come to a problem! Does anyone know what you do with a new car in the tax year? The last car I had I did the mileage/petrol route in my accounts but with the new car I'm not sure if I can change and if so how do I work out what to put through? The car an 8 seater was bought specifically for my business but obviously it's used for private use too!!!!! Please help,, I'm getting worried as January 31st is looming ........ Really grateful for anyones input !

There was a thread a few weeks ago (since Christmas) linking to some advise

Yes you can change with the new car.

I would give their helpline a call. I've had to in the past and they are very helpful.

I've just been organising my carrier bags (receipts etc) ready for doing this very job tomorrow (day off!). Please will you come back with what you find out about this as I'm currently looking for an 8 seater car to purchase (sorry but if you can recommend one, that would also be fab) and would like to know what to do with my accounts once I've done that Wink

Good luck! :)

Check with the tax office but I think if you decide to claim for the cost of a new car as a capital purchase you then have to claim all your car expenses individually rather than using the mileage allowance & have to produce full accounts rather than the 3 line profit & loss version. Having said that its a few years since I looked into this and the rules may well have changed.

sorry no help, I worked it out to be more benifical to do milage as don't use my car much!

Grin as my accounts completed, and nearly for 2010/2011 halo smiley!
