hiya,im a nanny, just wondering if any one could help me iv just started using my car for work as the children are now at different schools and nursery and my employers have not mentioned paying for my petrol or wear and tear on my car im feeling a little miffed with this but dont know how to bring up the conversation also how much is other nannies getting for fuel and wear and tear?

also i may be moving in the summer if my husband gets a promotion so would have to hand in my notice, i have never signed a contract so was wondering how long i would need to give notice for and im employed term time only so could my notice go over one of the holidays?? thank you

HMRC: Mileage. You can claim back via form P87. However it is probably easier for you if your employer pays mileage at 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles done each year.

The 40p is the AMAP rate which has not changed in years... however it should cover the fuel used plus contribute a bit towards the other costs.

Remember that you need different insurance when transporting other peoples children as part of your job. Business Class 1 is a minimum. Some insurers will provide other cover such as policies especially designed for nannies (these are not available through comparison websites, contact your insurance brooker, or see MortonMichel: Motor Insurance for Childcarers.

How to raise it with your employer is more tricky as it depends on your relationship with them. Keep a log of all mileage done then say tell them how much the mileage is in the week and tell them that nannies using their own car tend to get that paid for at 40p per mile, as per information on HMRC website.

When you say you haven't signed a contract... does that mean you have never seen a contract, or that you do have one but you didn't sign it?

If you have Never seen a contract, then it's 1 week notice for each year worked - see ACAS: Notice Periods

If you have seen the contract but just haven't signed it... then it's as per the contract - as you have been working for them for a while and thus have accepted the contract.

However, remember that you will be wanting a reference from them. So let them know what's happening say towards the beginning of that term... then officially give notice towards the end of term - so they then have the notice period plus the school holidays to find a replacement.
