is this out of order?

I share a mindee with another cm (don't ask!). Anyway I see in her notes that she gave mindee calpol yesterday because she woke up after 45mins (should be napping from 1-3) and was distressed n wouldn't go back down. She gave the calpol then put her back down. I think this is out of order and thought you couldn't give calpol just like that but had to ring the parents first - am I wrong about this? Thanks for your opinions!

Maybe permission had been given when the parents dropped her off if the child had been ill.

needtogetalife · 18/11/2010 15:36

she shouldnt be giving calpol just for those reasons either.

pippin26 · 18/11/2010 20:08

I would be questioning as to why the child was given Calpol for apparently no reason. If the child is/has been ill enough to need Calpol then you should be told.

If Calpol/medication is being given for reasons of 'settling them', 'helping them back to sleep' then that is very very wrong. Its paracetamol for goodness sake.

Sounds like the sleep regime is being implemented rather ridgidly.

I would make a note of your concern and also any response that you are given. and then take it from there.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/11/2010 20:21

depends if ill/teething etc

i give medicine as and when i think it is needed, but im a nanny rather than a cm and have parents total permission

StarExpat · 18/11/2010 20:48

My cm has my total permission to give calpol as needed and I'd expect it to be given as and when needed. However, I trust that she would not give him calpol just to get him to take a longer nap Hmm. If he woke from teething or being unwell or something then that's a different story.

StarExpat · 18/11/2010 20:50

Sorry, the Hmm wasn't to you, blondes. It was to the OP's co-cm who did this. Just reread and it looked a bit odd the way I worded it.

MmeGazelle · 18/11/2010 21:15

I can't see the problem with it myself, I would assume that the parents have mentioned that child isn't well and when they woke early it confirmed it, so CM gave Calpol straight away. I do this to my own DD, the Calpol isn't to get her back to sleep it is merely given as quickly as possible so that it can start working asap.

I have permission from my mindees parents to give Calpol if I think they need it, there is a portion in the NCMA folder that allows you to note down the last dosage time/amount that parent gave, and then all of your doses. If the illness has come on suddenly whilst child is in my care then I'd phone parent just to make sure they hadn't forgotten to tell me anything at drop-off, but if they'd mentioned teething/fever etc then I wouldn't ask their permission to give Calpol.

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 18/11/2010 21:29

maybe little one was teething?

Oligo · 18/11/2010 23:59

I've given calpol when mb has asked me to but when I wouldn't have chosen to. If they are ill it can settle them but if they aren't really very under the weather just runny nose etc. calpol seems to make some children just go loopy and not sleep/wake up early. I've tested this time and again with certain children. What are the E numbers in it?

aceandskill · 19/11/2010 08:05

On reflection (and thanks to your comments)I think I was probly being a bit over the top - it's not really a big deal is it? I personally would never do this unless the child had been a bit ill or whatever before they came, and I know from talking to the mum that this wasn't the case. However I'm sure lots of people would. And yes pippin, the sleep regime is implemented very tightly! wish I could get all mine down for 2 hours every day at the same time! Maybe I will give them all some calpol....joke

My own 2 are that bit older, but Calpol never worked like that on them, sending them to sleep that is.
Now a mum I know uses Medised, she was apparently told by a member of staff in the chemist, it has phenagen in it, it apparently known for its sleep inducing properties.
