Hi any ideas for activities for a child just a year old.

This week coming I will have her to myself after the school run until pick up again. Got outside activiites lined up but would love some suggestions for in house stuff.

THANKS

It really depends on how old as 12 months is very different to 23 months - how many months is she?

MUM2BLESS · 13/11/2010 23:26

She will be 1 yr tomorrow.

Chase bubbles or a balloon around the living room. Cheap, easy and entertaining.

MUM2BLESS · 13/11/2010 23:32

Not yet walking. Do I just put out suitable toys and have free play?

Washing up bowl with inch of water in it, add fish toys to catcg or pots and pans to wash up, whateverer you have. Put it on the floor with a towel under. Lots of fun.

jelly play is lovely

risk assess of course

Is the child mobile at all? If so balloon move slowly and are directable, so you can hit it close to where the child is. This will improve strength and motability.

Suitable toys and free play are good, but you will want to schedule some organised play if you are to be together for more than half an hour.

Making noise is good, with instruments or pots and spoons. Nursery rhymes, peek-a-boo and waving your hands about (if you can do these together, all the better) are good for kids. Don't underestimate the entertainment value of slapstick, put on a show, mess about and fall over, dance. Or maybe it's just my dancing that has kids in stitchesBlush.

Handling keys, spoons, gloves and anything else that they can't swallow and isn't deadly allows them to explore objects they see everyday, yet do not know what they do.

Mum2bless let your imagination run wild and then narrow the options down by assessing their safety.

An important thing that is rarely mentioned is this: Enjoy whatever it is you do. Teaching children how to have fun is just as important (if not more so) as developmental tasks.Smile

Thanks everyone.

I have four kids of my own, all in full time school. Its so different childminding with little ones.

Love your ideas ie balloon, bowl, etc. I will ensure that I make it fun for both of us.

Going to the childminding group later tomorrow, been before but not with this little one. Should be very interesting though!

Keep your ideas coming, thanks again.

Do you have a local pet shop? We often go to see the rabbits and fish etc. Garden centres too, often have fish.

MUM2BLESS · 15/11/2010 21:14

Great idea sunberryhat.

I enjoy going to the library, toy library and children's centre too.
