Does anyone employee one, or have an idea of how much they would cost in central London, to pick up after school 5 days a week?

I work FT, and am trying to work out what to do when DD starts school (currently in daycare).

Thanks Smile

No idea but I'll be looking for the same thing in September (not in London though) so I'll be watching this with interest.

I've got one that I pay £9/h gross, zone 2/3 London. She has a year's experience as a nanny in her home country (and is fantastic). I used to pay £12/h gross to my experienced full time nanny.

My friend who lives in the same area pays £7.50/h to uni students. Both parties are happy with that.

On the one hand, you can afford not to use someone super experienced and expensive as the kids are easier to look after... on the other hand it's only a part time job and you need to pay enough to make it a job they'll stick around for. Not a straightforward balance.

Thanks Mickytoo; apart from picking up, what do you get her to do? Does she help your DC with their homework, get them tea etc?

She takes them to pre-arranged after school activities and does play dates. She cooks and feeds dinner, does laundry, dishwasher, tidying up (she starts working 45 min before pick up so she can do some of this alone). Kids don't get enough homework at the moment for her to do it with them but I will ask her once they do.

Ooh, that sounds good. Can I ask how you went about finding her?

She responded to my advert on Gumtree. Bit of a leap of faith as she had not nannied in the UK before but I'm very pleased to have trusted my instinct. (I did get a friend who speaks the language to call up her reference in her home country). The only downside is that her English isn't great as she's a language student.

Have a look at www.afterschoolcare.co.uk - it covers before and after school care and might have some quidelines about pay for carers.
