Please could you give me some advice on what you need to do when taking children on outings. ie your security procedure.

I have been minding for just over two years. i do not drive at present and tend to walk to most places with the children. We go to events and places within my area.

What do you do when you are going on a trip with the kids further than your local area.

Thanks much appreciated Smile

I just make sure I can control all the children. Do the normal risk assessment. Take pushchairs, reins, nappies, changes of clothes, food, medicine etc as needed. To me, the most important thing is knowing that none of the children will be able to run off near traffic, or go out of sight. If it is a really big outing (ie train to london) I speak to their parents first.

I have a small photo album with details of me and my husband who is my emergency contact. It also has details of the children, parents and signed permission in case of an accident.

I take drinks, snacks and the usual stuff.

I usually go with another minder as its easier to go to the loo etc.

I have a notebook to scribble risk assessments in and adhoc obs which always goes with me.

I have an emergency contact book with me always, it has both mine & the lo?s contact & medical details with photo and the usual day the lo is with me (to help identify children if I?m indisposed). I also carry a first aid kit, and of course the RA. Nappies, wipes & change of clothes, plus drinks and snack. I tell parents if I?m planning on going out of our normal area and get written permission (I already have permission for outings on foot and public transport within a small radius of my setting). Check you mobile is charged before leaving home.

Me again..

If you were travelling with another childminder i know that they would need to have adequate insurance but how do you stand with buses etc (seatbelts etc)

Public buses don't have seatbelts so you just have to ensure the children sit back on the seat & supervise them all the time. I would consider an outing anytime you leave your setting, although there are various degrees of outing. e.g. school run, shopping, trip to the park or one further afield to the beach, museum etc.

I have 'regular' outings and 'other' outings, but most of the safety checks are the same (ie transport, safety getting from the vehicle to the venue, etc).
