Would you say metal pots and pans are suitable for under 1's to play with ?

My nursery has in the baby room a selection of household objects for sensory play I guess and when I arrived this morning I witnessed a 10 month old wack herself on the head with a metal pan.
Am I over reacting in thinking I would not want this "toy" around my baby ? Am worried now my 20 week old who is propped up on a cushion might accidently or not, be subjected to a random wack to by un co-ordinated babies.

Your child will be accidentally whacked by babies, it is part and parcel of life in a nursery. I am not sure about the pans though, I suppose if htey are no heavier/shaarper etc than other toys it should be no real problem...hmm, not sure, sorry that is no help is it?!

He's not a child though is he, he's a baby and I can't help but feel that anything at all that he or the other little ones could hurt themselves or others with should be out of their reach not offered to them to play with.
Just wondered what others thought.

I let mine have them when they were under one...mine would not have been able to pick one up though...maybe the nursery ones are lighter?

I think if you put your baby to be near other babies then it is very likelyit will recieve the odd whack...it's part of life!

But I also do not think it's ok for them to prop a 20 week old baby on the floor near 10 month old babies with pans!

cross post OP

I do think that if your baby is that young it should not be on a cuchion on the floor near older babies unless someone is sitting right beside him.

mamatomany · 02/11/2010 23:54

When you say mine do you mean your own or mindee's ?

I have lots of doubts about this "ofstead outstanding" nursery, propped on the floor with cushions being one of them, especially when some of the 7 month olds roll over and end up face down and crying and aren't attended too quickly.

My own DC's mamatomony.

It seems odd...tiny babies like that need to be in someones arms or in something with sides...at a height where other babies or toddlers cannot reach them...I would have thought!

mamatomany · 03/11/2010 00:00

Mine is the youngest there and gets put in a kidney bean shaped cushion or the bouncy chair when he's not held.
The older ones, which I watch because my DS is going to be getting the same treatment in 2/3 months time I've seen roll over into awkward positions they can't get themselves out of.
This pan thing is worrying me, the girl needed a cold compress and had a red mark so it must have hurt.

No he is a child, yes in the baby stage but still a child. If it is easier then yes your baby will get bashed at times, hopefully not so much at this stage but certainly going forward.

When you say not being atended to quickly how long do you mean?

My feeling is that you are being PFB about this - but that is an instinctive response, I don't want to miss anything and dismiss a real concern! So far nothing you have said strikes me as being particularly out of order. You cannot keep everything away from them so that is unrealistic.

mamatomany · 03/11/2010 00:04

He's my 4th so I'm well past the PFB stage I do appreciate things happen at nursery but not really with pots and pans and 20 weeks into the world I wouldn't have thought.

Even at 10 months old I'm not sure if I was her mother i'd be impressed with a report my LO had hit herself with a metal pan, it's just not what you expect them to be playing with is it ? If he was bashed with a teddy I'd fully understand.
Well I don't/didn't.

Hmm, I am still not sure tbh. The floor is probably as likely to cause as much damage as is a child accidentally running into them and so on. Red marks and cold compresses are standard IME when dealing with a room full of toddlers and babies!

I don't know, at the end of the day it is up to you but if your only concern is the pans then I would probably leave it myself - but we all have different levels that we think are acceptable so I am not dismissing your worries!

ForMashGetSmash · 03/11/2010 00:26

I don't think you are being PFB about it...its instinct isn't it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/11/2010 07:31

pots&pans are great fun - nut earmuffs are needed for the adult Grin

not sure if i would be happy for my 20 week old to be propped up with cushions and left alone

but if someone is there then they can keep an eye on pans and other children

mrsthomsontobe · 03/11/2010 07:57

pots and pans are great to play with ive seen children put them on there head or use them as drums with wooden spoons. i dont see anything wrong with this

mamatomany · 03/11/2010 08:46

Ok so it would seem it's the level of supervision rather than the items themselves i've a problem with.
Thanks for the input, appreciate it.
