Hi, I'm a childminder and had a enquriy for a full time vacancy starting Jan 2011. I have a vacancy for immediate start & looking to fill this space ASAP, someone has asked what deposit/retainer would I charge to hold this place till jan. I've never charged this before what do you recommend?

Very often it's 50% of the fee and you agree to be available whenever they want to use the space.

Posted too early...

A retainer is non-refundable - it's to replace your income. A deposit is refundable. Make sure you're clear about what you're being asked for and what you're offering.

If your space is open now I'd charge a retainer. If you were promising a space which is currently filled but opening up in January I'd charge a deposit.

Thank you, I did wonder that thought it might be too cheeky to ask. They suggested too, not me.

Saz, go for it and remember if they do use you before Jan, they pay full rate for those hours. Good luck :)
