Pay rates for nanny with own child?

We are looking at a nanny who will bring their own baby with them. At the time when she comes to nanny for us her baby will be around 9 months old and she will look after our two (one will be at school, one will be just 2).

I am not sure what salary to offer her and would welcome some advice. She has not had a nanny job before, but has worked in a nursery (though she is not a qualified nursery nurse). We are in the South East, outer London I guess. It will be a 3 day a week position.

From what I can see nanny salaries are about £8-£10 gross p/h. I was thinking we should offer less because she will be bringing her own baby, as well as the fact that she doesn't have formal experience as a nanny before. Does £7.50 p/h sound in the right ballpark?

20-30% less than market rate would be about right. So you are in the right ballpark.

The lack of nannying experience and lack of qualification may reduce it even more. Did you advertise the job at any specific rate, or give a salary range? Cost of living in London can be high, so probably wouldn't go below £7 gross p/h... esp given it's part-time.

You can offer low to start with and then give a rise after probation, after 1 year etc. It's a lot harder to reduce pay at a later date... so try to work out what would be acceptable for both of you initially. Then give it a trial and see how things go.

Explain to me a fair way to calculate pay for a nanny who brings own child to work

Good to know I am on the right track. I don't want to go much lower as I want to make sure she gets a decent wage, it's bloody hard work looking after children all day and I know she is paid quite a bit less at the nursery currently, which I was actually quite shocked at.

Hi,

I placed a nanny with her own child a few weeks ago to a family who pays 75% of the offered salary to her.
