CRB Should I be worried? Any advice please...

My DH's crb check came back, no probs under the criminal and prosecutions section but in the section for 'stuff you should be aware of' section there was a report from 2007 of when my dh hit his son/my stepson. he was 14 at the time, had been kicked out of 2 schools and was caught with a knife at his new school. this was the final straw for my dh who hit him. social services visited, my dh admitted it and nothing further came of it, no criminal charge or caution his son did not live with us and social services left it at that.

i am really worried, i know that ofsted consider everything before they approve a childminder but could this cost me my registration. i was so angry when we got the certificate, i could barely remember the incident and my stepson is nearly 18 and it feels like a lifetime ago when he was 14.

does anyone know of any situations like mine that ofsted have still approved
registration?

also, when we i knew the checks had been completed i called ofsted who said that once they receive the confirmation of the checks and everything is okay then they will send out the registration certificate within a few days, now they are saying that someone is looking into it and may have to come to our home to visit with dh or may further inquiries or request more information from the police???

what do i do now?

Ofsted may well want to interview your DH about the incident. It's a problem - as it is assult against a minor.

You may want to consider if you could put measures in place that would mean that your DH would not be at home when minded children are present. That may be sufficient for Ofsted to give approval.
Honesty is best policy. Give Ofsted all information they ask for - make them aware of the circumstances involved.

Ofsted will be trying to ascess the risk he may pose to minded children. So the more they know about it the better they can ascess that risk.

If he wasn't even cautioned for the incident then I don't think it would make him automatically "disqualified"; if he were that would mean you would be disqualified too as he's a member of your household and you would then have to apply to Ofsted to "waive" your disqualification by explaining why he wouldn't be a risk to minded children in your home. However as nannynick says, any sort of concerning information like this has to be considered when Ofsted look at declaring you suitable or unsuitable for registration as a childminder, and they may want to talk to him and you to get more information.

Things they might ask could be how often would he be home during minding hours, how might he have handled the incident with his son differently in retrospect, how would he react if faced with minded children screaming and shouting and misbehaving, etc. Ofsted understandly just want to be sure that adults around minded children know how to behave appropriately - and that smacking or slapping is clearly unacceptable.

update....

i got a call from ofsted today and they are visiting us on wednesday.

dh is upset that he might be the cause of ofsted refusing my registration but i have assured him that they just want to get to the bottom of what happened and make sure that he poses no threat, which sounds a bit harsh when put like that iykwim

fingers crossed because he is such a loving quiet man so i will let you know how it goes
