Would a nanny be more expensive than a childminder?

Hello ladies

I have just found out I am pregnant! SO that makes it 3 kids! EEEKKK!

Lovely news but unplanned and we are worried about the finances and how we are going to manage. To be honest I am only 33 and don;t want to totally give up my career either...so reduced hours may be an option though!

Anyway, I am only 5 weeks gone but already thinking about options that would mean I can keep my job in whatever reduced form it may be and still afford childcare and also bills!

So, I currently send my 2 boys to a childminder. She charges £4 an hour ( we are outside london ). So my weekly bill for the 2 boys is about £220. I work a 4 day week.

So that makes an average 4 week month ( not school holidays ) of about £900.

Now that I am going to have to think about another child, would a nanny be anymore cost efficient?

Has anyone got experience of nannies and how much they cost and well any information that can help me figure out what we may have to do assuming the pregnancy goes through and we greet a 3rd little one?

Any advice or help would be hugely appreciated.

A nanny will be a bit more I expect... but it has the benefit of you not needing to get your children dressed in the morning.

Does your childminder have space for a baby? Will they charge the same, or different?

A qualified experienced nanny outside of London will cost say £10 per hour gross (may be a little lower if you are a long way from a major city - perhaps less by 20%). You then pay employers NI on top of that, plus have some payroll admin costs (unless doing that yourself). You then also have other factors to consider, such as food, heating/lighting, wear and tear on your home. Also there are activities costs and transport costs.

See: Example costs of a nanny for more information on likely costs.

congrats and yes by the time you have 3 children then generally more cost effective to employ a nanny

plus a lot easier for you in the mornings as you can just get yourself ready and the nanny sort out the children

saying that your total cost ph would be £12 for a cm, yes you could get a nanny with lots of exp for £12gross but then you would have extra costs with tax and ni/food/heating bills etc as nanny would be based in your house

so may cost a bit more but your get your sanity back (and with 3 dc you will need it lol ) Grin
