Night Nanny to be is looking for unpaid work experience

Hi

I am a nanny with nearly four years experience and I will do the OCN Maternity Practitioner Award next February. I want to work as a night nanny and a maternity nurse and therefore I would like to gain some work experience.

Mums, is anyone of you looking for some help? I do not expect to be paid and will offer my help for free in return for a reference. I have experience with children newborn to seven years old and have read several books etc. I can provide excellent references from my positions.

Please get in touch if you would like to have some help 1-2 nights a week or for a few hours during the day.

Nadine

where are you based and where are you willing to travel to?

NJE · 13/10/2010 21:09

Hi, I am based in London and I am happy travel in the whole Greater London area but if someone would like me to stay overnight I would be happy to travel outside London but would really appreciate if the family would cover at least part of the travel costs.

Contact simply angelic nanny agency, they are placing new mat nurses for half price! I know a few nannies to use them.

I have also read a few books- can I be a night nanny too? Grin

Suzihaha · 13/10/2010 22:04

Hi. Send me a message and we can discuss. I have 2 DSs who think sleep is not necessary!

NJE · 13/10/2010 22:24

@KeithTalent
Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear about that. In one of my positions the mum was pregnant again and asked me to read several books on sleeptraining etc. as she asked me to look after her newborn baby as soon as she come home with it.
I am not qualified yet but do have experience. I would like to work as a professional night nanny and hopefully a maternity nurse later on in my life I am looking to gain more experience with young babies.
I do not want to get paid for my help and I think my "offer" is fair. I am sure that there are mothers who would like to have some sleep at least one or two nights a week.

TBH I wouldn't offer yourself for free. Even if you have some experience you should be able to get some work. Contact some agencies and get them to get them to help you.

Could you do any other courses at MNT until Feb. Have you got your paediatric first aid? CRB.

Good luck.

NJE · 14/10/2010 11:56

Yes, I will do two other courses in November(Baby Care and looking after multiples.)

I am just about to get OFSTED registered, so CRB is in process and I am first aid trained + insured.

KeithTalent, people have kids before they know anything about parenting. Should they stop having kids until they take on nanny/night nanny course?

OP, I think your approach on this is very cleaver. I will let new parents know about your post.

Good luck,
Bluegreen

Don't underprice yourself! Even with your limited experience you should be able to get work with some pay. The going rate for night nannies ranges from £7-15 per hour iirc so just undercut the opposition iyswim. Offer yourself at £5 an hour for your first 3 or 4 jobs. After that you'll have good enough refs to ask £7 an hour. After a year you could ask £8. Its still not big money but you need longevity and commitment and experience before you'll get that :)

Good luck! I thought about going down that road but decided I am getting too tired of constant 24hr work. It does wear you down after a while.

Thanks @Wrinklyraisin

I can see your point, but guess it is hard to find even little paid work with the limited experience I have at the moment. I can also only offer 1-2 nights a week as I have other commitments.

You could get in touch with your local TAMBA group? I'm sure there would be plenty of mums of multiples who would LOVE you to help one or two nights a week! Plus getting multiples experience would make you even more marketable.

A friend of mine is expecting twins and would be so grateful for help

She isn't due until the end of November - is this too late for you?

NJE · 14/10/2010 13:41

@Rubyslippers

No, not at all. Could you tell me a bit more about it?

OP posts:
rubyslippers · 14/10/2010 14:24

She is due twins and she has an older child

I can tell you more of the back story but would prefer to do via email so it is more private

Do you have an email address?

sleepwhenidie · 14/10/2010 14:28

NJE please CAT me - my DS2 is 9m and waking every 2 hrs through the night, I want to stop bf him in a month or two and need help as I can only get him back to sleep by feeding him at the mo! I am in NW1.

kanna · 17/10/2010 09:13

Hey you could help me I am having to go into hospital on Tues 19th as a have a major slipped disc - only found out on Friday 15th. I have managed to get my husband to take a week off but I'm in a dilemma for the other 2 weeks of convalesce. I have a baby girl of 3 months (sleeps from 11am to 6-7am) it seems silly to get 24/7 nurses in but I don't think I have an option as I can't lift her. I will probably go and camp with my sisters who live quite a distance away. If you could do a couple of nights week of 25th or 1st November it would give me a bit longer in my own home. I live in East Sheen, 1 minute from Mortlake station.

Strix · 18/10/2010 19:32

Hmmm... This is interesting. I am having a baby on 16th December. Could possibly use some help in early January. My budget is fairly tight, but I would of course have to pay you something. I live in West London. You mention only 1 or 2 nights perweek availability. I might be interested. I don't really need/want someone to do everynight as I see that as my time with the baby. But, a break on one night a week wher I could just sleep might be nice.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this really. What sort of experience are you hoping to get? And, ideally, what hours are you looking for?

emmapi · 19/10/2010 19:43

I have a few friends about to give birth who im sure would welcome the help - what's your email address or telephone number? can you email it to me at [email protected]
