live-in nanny wages

Hi
I was just wondering if anyone had an idea of how much a live-in nanny in zone 2 SW London might expect to earn?

Our current nanny earns £500 per week net, but is live-out. We're moving house and may have room for a live in nanny, but not really sure whether the savings will balance the loss of privacy and extra costs involved (i.e. food, phone, etc).

Any advice very gratefully received.

Depends on the nanny! And the hours...

£300-£500gross is the range I'd expect for London. Someone newly qualified might be cheaper.

Thanks frakkinstein, I guess the hours would be similar to now - 8-6pm.

Is it really the same cost for a live-in versus a live-out nanny? Blimey, I thought it'd be at least a couple of hundred quid a week cheaper to take account of the fact that she'll have no living expenses as we'll pay them all. Or doesn't it work like that?

It doesn't really work like that IME.

Your hours are short for live in - often live outs do 10 hour days, live ins 12.

You might not have rent or other outgoings but privacy is something live outs pay for! Plus a live in will usually do a babysit a week as part of their contract, bumping up the hours some more.

So consider a 50 hour week for a live out vs a typical 65 give or take hour week for a live in.

You can get even more expensive but they will be very, very experienced or working max flexibility.

And I quoted gross - it works out roughly that your £500 net a week nanny is on £671 gross. £500 gross a week is about £200 less! That's £380 net, which actually might be a little low for central London. You'd get good candidates for that but some might expect £600 gross (£450 net).

That's with current thresholds though - remember nanny will get an effective salary ruse in Aprol.

rise in April...

I have such fat fingers!

deedar · 13/10/2010 15:21

Oh. yes, sorry, I should have noticed that gross nestling next to your 300-500. That will make a big diffence to our outgoings. And babysitting, sigh, how lovely. We've only been out together once this WHOLE year!

What's happening in April? [know I ought to know, but really have no idea].

Tax threshold goes up so more untaxed income = net rise in the same gross salary.

There are many advantages to live ins but babysitting is probably a biiiig one!

Don't underestimate the cost increase in your bills, my food bills was easily several hundreds of pounds more expensive when we had the live in nanny, and she didn't eat very much!!

I always had this sense of obligation to prepare a properly cooked meal when she was eating at home, even though often I would have done something simpler for myself. Of course you could always just arrange for her to have an allocation of food that she prepared for herself, but again, that is going to cost you!

The electricity and were also much higher, which surprised me because I would have thought the increase would be minor as the nanny is at home with the children during the day, but it was.

Also, if you don't have a separate bathroom for her you have the issue of bathroom timings, when she should wash clothes, etc. It can get tricky.

Our phone costs didn't actually go up because she lived on her mobile phone - so maybe you could get a mobile contract with a large txt allowance/minutes allowance - if exceeded then she would have to make up the difference.

is your current nanny going to be live in (does she want that)

or are you moving miles away so need a new nanny and decided to try and cut costs

deedar · 13/10/2010 17:04

Our current nanny doesnt want to live-in, as it'd mean moving across london and she's settled and happy where she is. Also, think the idea of living with us and not being able to escape horrifies her - which I totally understand!

I'm technically a live in nanny so do two babysits a week mon-Thursday and work 12 hour days. But my bosses also rent a two bed flat for me and I earn £420 a week net. I do have a lot of experience but I doubt you'll find anyone for under £350 unless they're just starting out. You do get paid more for live in I've found. HTH
