what would you pay? would you do e.g. 39 weeks full and 13 half, or just full for the 39 term time weeks? what woudl you consider reasonable in order to retain a decent p/t nanny?

Would you actually use at all in holidays?

We use ours all year round, just a few hours in term-time (sometimes as little as two per day) but up to 11 hours a day in holidays. Thing is, though, that holiday time is super-easy & fun (for someone who likes looking after children!) whereas the term-time is quite pressured & nonstop & not anything so much "fun". So we do a "smooth" over the whole year, so that she has a living wage throughout but a little bit of uplift to reflect the long hours in holidays. (If you looked at it as pay-per-hour it would look dramatically overpaid in term-time & not very generous in holiday. But as year-round, it works out as a reasonable living income, which is the big issue with part-time people.)

If you're not using at all in holidays ... I don't know, you're talking about a retainer aren't you?

we're both teachers, so no need to use in hols, we tend to be away anyway. I guess we are talking about a retainer, just not sure how much that should be

I work 3 days a week termtime only. I am paid for 45 weeks (I asked for an extra weeks holiday due to my 25 years experience as a nanny), split over 12 monthly payments like a teacher.

I think we worked out that the pro rata'd holiday for a 39 week term worker was 5 weeks (15 days for a 3 day week job), so 44 weeks paid per year. This is the legal minimum that she should be paid, as even though she would work termtime only she is still entitled to holiday pay. If you were paying 13 weeks at half pay, that would obviously be above the minimum.

nbee84 do you mind me asking what your take home is every month?

nbee84 · 02/10/2010 20:47

No don't mind you asking. I take home £1,005 per month. I work 31.5 hours a week. It equates to around £17k per year, roughly £8.50 net per hour, which is just under £11 gross per hour.

But don't quote me on those figures, they are just rough, I'm not mathmatically minded Grin

And I'm just inside the M25, but not in London, so rates are a bit lower here than London rates.
