Nanny interviews - predicting the future!

So, people who have had good/bad/ it?s ok experiences with nannies, what signs at the interview, if any either indicated to you that things were going to work out well, or, in retrospect should have maybe nudged you into thinking ?no?

Am interviewing for a replacement nanny today, our current nanny was filling in a year until her grad placement work started, so we lose her in Nov. Both dh and I interview people fairly regularly at work, so we?re pretty comfortable in the whole ?what kind of questions? and what to look for aspect of the interviews, but am aware that interviews often don?t flush out potential issues, so we?ll obviously be following up references/paper trail etc but I was wondering what in retrospect may have made you reconsider your choice, or conversely things you picked up at interview, that than made you feel validated in your choice. The lady is coming round today, I?ll have 30 min with her in peace, then dh gets home with the girls, so we can see how she interacts with them, plus if today goes well she?s free to join current nanny with the girls tomorrow morning, and see how things go without us there (and I trust our current nanny?s people judgement a lot as well)

I had a 'trial' Saturday which I paid the nanny for when I had to be at home but desperately needed to get things done.

I laughingly joked - who's having more fun, DS or you? to her when they were playing outside. That's what swung it for me - she was truly enjoying being with my DS and my DS was having a fantastic time playing with her outside.

I was looking for someone who liked children. I don't think this is as daft as it sounds - I've seen lots of bored nannies at play groups and parks, texting away instead of watching little Hugo.

DS1 chose his second nanny - he was 21 months old at the time. He got her playing behind the curtains while she answered my interview questions. Then when she came back to meet DH he sent her straight back to the curtains again.

Thanks - it went pretty well yesterday I think - the three year old had her building a cubby house out of a shoe box and they both seemed happy enough - will see how she gets on today when we're not about, with our current nanny - I think that will show more - both girls were a bit clingy with me yesterday, as they always are at the end of a work day.
