I did a contact list drill today, (I do mean to do them once a quarter, but forget, so have now put a reminder in my phone for January)

All my parents had got back to my text within an hour , most immediately. I was really pleased as last time I had an emergency I couldnt get hold of the parents, one had changed numbers the other didnt reply to text cos thought the other parent would!

Well done my Parents

I do a fire drill once a quarter as well, anything else we should do?

Ooh, I like that idea - must test it myself. I have one parent who has the most fantasic list of excuses as to why she hasn't replied to a text or msg left for her :)
We do evacuation drills rather than just fire but nothing else at the moment

oooh I've never done a contact drill

that is a FAB idea

I do an evacuation drill every quarter, and when a new child starts, and when the mood takes me

I log it, the time and date, the children present, which route taken (I have route A and Route B) and also have a column for matters arising ie forgot to take register (my policy says that I will take register if to hand but will not delay evac to get it. IYSWIM)

I do an 'evacuation' drill, I made the mistake of mentioning the word 'fire drill' to a 6 and 8y/o and there was far too much excitement, cue me spending half an hour trying to get them to take it seriously rather than thinking of elaborate ways to get out of my burning house Hmm

I do a fire alarm test once a month, I do an evacuation every 6 weeks or so, or if I think someone hasn't been present for the last one.

I have the same layout for the paperwork as Boys, time, date, people present, matters arising (and what you will do to cure it) and whether it was a alarm test, an evacuation practice or both. If there are two alarms in your property mark down which alarm you tested (if you only tested one).

I have 3 routes of exit, I write which exit I took - I still don't have a floor plan so it's not as easy as writing route A or B but I shall definitely get one drawn up ... possibly! Wink

oh and I keep a seperate tick sheet for weekly testing of alarms, sign and dated, and date of battery replacement too

my floor plan is just a handdrawn plan with Route A and Route B drawn in red pen, laminated and up on the wall; hardly david hockney standard Grin

I know I should crack on and do mine .... I just can't be bothered, awful isn't it but I really have lost all enthusiasm for that sort of thing. One mindee is 11m, the other is 21m, I struggle to get motivated for serious signage when it's just me that's able to read it!!

Why do you need a route plan when it's your own house? the mind boggles at unnecessary paperwork.
