I've never heard of a travelling teddy!!

nannynick · 11/09/2010 22:29

Me neither. What is a Travelling Teddy?
Is this some silly nursery thing where you give a teddy to a child to take home then their parents make up something about the exciting trip the teddy went on, when in reality it got chucked in the back of a cupboard for the weekend!

boppetybop · 11/09/2010 22:41

hahaha yeh that's the one, so don't the kids like it then? I was told about it by nursery staff.

Kids adore it. Parents hate it. and many will give it a go through the washing machine, but not unfortunately , the ones who send it back covered in snot, dog hair and jam.

Its not just teddy, its the flipping diary of what teddy did with Little Jonny and Tabitha and Arhmed. Ever tried reading it? only so many ways to say " teddy came home, we had tea, we had a story, went to bed, got up, teddy came back to nursery"

nannynick · 11/09/2010 22:45

No... parents hate it. It's a waste of time. Last thing parents want to do at the weekend is take photos of Teddy as they go on their adventure.

I expect there are quite a few message threads about the subject on the nursery board (and AIBU as well I expect).

I do wonder who's stupid idea it was. Can you tell I hate Travelling Teddy Grin and I've never had to actually do it... I've only read about it and yet I still hate it!

zandy · 11/09/2010 22:46

Don't forget the one-upmanship.

Child one takes teddy home and has tea.
Child two takes teddy home and has a meal out.
Child three takes teddy on a journey.
Child four takes teddy on holiday for the weekend.
Child five buys new clothes for teddy
and so on, ad nauseum.

When my sons nursery did this a couple of yrs ago, it turned into a 'lets outdo the others' competition - and that was the parents, not the kids Grin

Rory the rabbit ended up in Italy, which made me feel pretty crap, cos I'd only had him climbing trees and ging on the swings in the local park!!!! Blush

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2010 00:07

we had the nurseries giraffe and he came with pj's and toothbrush

had to do a photo and a diary of an EXCITING event and get both back THE NEXT DAY

was not impressed at the short notice

underpaidandoverworked · 12/09/2010 00:11

Blondes - did you really have to brush his teeth?? And put him to bed??

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2010 09:32

Oh yes and brush his fur before going to bed

I think giraffe went horse riding :)

thebody · 12/09/2010 09:43

love this thread.. just when you think our society have reached the peak of absurdity and total hijack of childrens ability to play by themselves without adult domination, then you hear bout this bloody teddy..

please parents.. just say no..or have teddy going out at night as a pimp, drug dealer who indulges in casual sex acts with girl bears .. that should do the trick

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2010 11:12

NN, you have never have the thrill joy nursery toy home? Shock

i have had the moth eaten creature home twice Grin, both siblings and sure when no 3 goes to nursery next year we shall have teddy/giraffe

there are only so many times teddy can go to the park/have tea/sit in the garden etc

hobbgoblin · 12/09/2010 11:17

Never.

Or, at least not until teddy is old enough to smoke crack and shag on the sofa.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2010 11:20

and what do you mean what age should you introduce teddy?

us nannies/parents dont get a choice,we just get informed one day at nursery that he is coming home with us and want him back tomorrow with diary and pics filled in

nbee84 · 12/09/2010 11:24

Lol at the body

Have to agree, it is a pain in the neck. You usually hear an audible groan from the parent/carer. The kids love getting Teddy to take home, but then moan & groan when it's time to sit down and write in 'his' diary. You pick Teddy up with the child at 3.30, then you have to 'do' something with him - be that the park or taking to football/ballet lesson etc, then it's time for supper, then you have a tired and grouchy child that's ready for bath and bed and it is not the best time to get them to sit down and write/draw [anger].

nbee84 · 12/09/2010 11:26

Angry even!

Millenium · 13/09/2010 11:24

It should be banned! If I had a child at nursery, I would refuse to take it home and I really would not take too much into account about what my child wanted (in this particular instance).

Like others I have heard of instances of one-upmanship with one child going back to nursery after Easter with a picture of the bloody bear at the top of The Eiffel Tower - what a crying shame they didn't drop it over the edge!

One Mum I know who got the bear sent home gave it to her large dog to play with - needless to say there wasn't much of the bear left within a few days and when the nursery manager sent a very business-like letter asking there whereabouts of the bear, the Mum simply a delivered a plastic bag of chewed up bear parts to the nursery and told them what to do with it!

thebody · 13/09/2010 16:37

love the sound of that mum.. what a crock..

pehaps bear could do a parashute jump and oh dear the second shute didnt open!!!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/09/2010 21:05

sure our monster puppy would love to eat play with giraffe/bear

givemesomecandy · 13/09/2010 23:51

I've had a bear, dog and duck sent home in the past! Usually for a weekend, my charges loved it, their parents not so much! I used to just make sure i got it all sorted on the friday ready for school on the monday.
I remember one child who took the dog up in his dads hot air balloon- it was pretty hard to top that!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2010 07:22

a weekend is fine, its when you get there at pickup on a tuesday and with no warning get given teddy/giraffe and then need to have that creature back on wednesday with diary filled in and with photos

a bit of warning would be nice

boppetybop · 14/09/2010 07:34

I thought the idea was quite cute, but after reading some comments on here, I take it no-body likes travelling ted, well apart from the kids lol
