Please give me your veiws, wether you be a Childminder, Nanny, Parent etc etc
At what age would you prehaps expect your child/charge to be able to wipe their own bottom with some profiency.
I cant remember how old my 2 were! it feels like an age ago..

Thanx

gosh, depends on the child I think, no hard and fast rules.. but if pushed I would say 2.5 at the earliest, then need to be able to hand wash and dry..(CM and parent)

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2010 14:51

depends how old they were when potty trained

and generally 6mths after that

i tend to try and get the child to start wiping by at least 3.5 as then most are at nursery and then obv school later on

tho i have had a dc friend round who would sit on the toilet, poo and then yell wipe my bum and i would yell back wipe it yourself (as child was 6yrs)

i think all children by the time they go to school 4/5yrs should be able to wipe their own bottom and do a good job of it

dark pants are essential Grin

Bonsoir · 09/09/2010 14:56

Dark pants may hide skid marks but don't prevent sore bottoms/nappy rash.

TBH, I think that bottom wiping is pretty much like tooth brushing - if you want it done really well and hygienically, it needs to be supervised until children are about 8.

wrinklyraisin · 09/09/2010 14:57

LOL at Blondes, I was going to say the same thing!

I had my charges making a fair attempt at wiping at 3.5 and then I would check (if they had pooped and it was messy lol) and most definiely taught them how to wash their hands really well after. Now at nearly 5 they are 99% there, although sometimes his pants are a little gross... they use those wet toilet wipes as they do a much better job at getting their bottoms clean.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2010 15:45

i disgaree bonsoir,if you teach them properly from an early age they can wipe well

my nearly 5yr can wipe VERY well ( no need for dark pants now Grin) and my neary 8yr would be VERY offended if i asked to inspect her bum daily!!

majafa · 09/09/2010 18:22

Blondes I think my 8yr old (9 in a couple of weeks would be offended too) ..lol

My mindee very rarley has a no2 here, and hes seems, well, most capable,of wiping himself when he does,
However mum says that over the holidays hes been with Grandma and Nursery and hes had 'messy' pants several times, can I wipe his bottom for him, (oh hes 3 1/2) as, her words, not mine, 'he doesnt wipe his own bottom at home'.
I've told her I'll supervise, as and when needed, and as with most things, it takes practice.

Any more thoughts on this subject appreciated ;-)

I was thinking about that now I childmind and I have a 4yo who does need help and asks for it.
Now my own daughter (nearly 7) even though she does wipe it well she sometimes does it the wrong way round and she ends up with an itchy noonie then we need to see a GP for some cream.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2010 20:11

just pratice majafa

and keep wiping till no poo left on the paper

wet wipes are handy tho many nurserys/schools dont have them so best to try and teach using loo roll

nannylocal · 09/09/2010 20:29

I'd say between 3 and 4. My oldest two charges (4 and 5) do their own very well.

The oldest learnt how to do it at nursery school as they had long mirrors in each toilet so they could inspect their own bottoms!

thebody · 09/09/2010 20:32

I would defintly feel a bit wierd inspecting a child of 8s bottom unless asked to by the child.. my dd would have been mortified, and locks the toilet door anyway..

anyway most kids get skids at times... and so do some adults I expect!!!

thebody · 09/09/2010 20:37

reading the posts again I was struck by APOTOMAC.. and the itchy noonie...

I called the front bum area a 'hoo hah'.. god knows why.. and have a 3 year old mindee who calls hers a 'winkie' and my rather naughty mother called it my 'holiday money'.. yes really,!!!! only got the significance of this as an adult...

fasinating thread that would be, why do we choose such names... couldnt gop down the vagina path though.. far too clincal.. lol

majafa · 09/09/2010 20:42

'and so do some adults I expect' - lol, course they do, anyone who says otherwise Hmm to that ;-)

Funnily enough Blondes thats what he does, wipes until no poo left, well he does here!!

I keep normal loo roll and wet wipes for the children to use.

Long mirror, that might be the way to go..lol

lol @the bodys comment - prob tmi but dh does sometimes Blush Grin

StillSquiffy · 10/09/2010 11:30

I think it depends on child. DD was 3 and started to refuse to let me help her do it, although she has been known to walk out of cubicles with no clothes on, turn round, touch the floor and ask me if her bottom is clean. did it in the middle of Pizzahut once....

DS though is nearly 7 and has only recently started to do it properly.

FallingWithStyle · 10/09/2010 11:40

I kind of agree with Bonsoir.

Sore bums and skid marks needn't happen, if the child has poo on their pants then they aren't wiping properly - I dont know why its almost expected that there will be skid marks and that thats ok. As for adults getting poo on their pants...minging and lazy, there's no excuse.

I still supervise ds who is 4.5 but wouldn't want to be doing that for much more than another year. I'll just have to make sure he understands how important it is to wipe properly and keep going til completely clean.

I wish they had wet wipes at in school toilets, would be much easier.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2010 13:22

there may be skid marks on children pants while they are learning to do it if at nursery/school etc

obv at home, they wipe, i check and either say well done or try again/wipe a bit more

totally agree no reason for adults but unfortunally does happen sometimes, just like v occassionally you may get a leakage from af - you dont plan/want it to happen but it does

EndangeredSpecies · 10/09/2010 13:25

tend to agree with bonsoir. dd is pretty clueless and is nearly 7. We compromise: I wipe, she uses the bidet / washes hands and flushes by herself. ds on the other hand is 18 mths younger and much better at it already.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2010 13:28

i do feel that children can be taught how to wipe properly, and before they are at full time education as no mum/nanny then to wipe their bum there

just like they get taught to use cultery/dress theirselves etc - by praticing they will be able to do it and def by 4/5yrs unless pt later than average child

denni70 · 10/09/2010 13:38

Whe my son was 2.5 and potty trained,I put a mirror on the floor so he could learn to wipe his bottom properly...took a few weeks until he was confident without. It is hard for children this age to get the right spot lol so this worked brilliantly!

surpriseme · 11/09/2010 14:37

My middle charge turned 3 in april and I've made a point in the school hols to get her to wipe herself. She starts pre-school next wk and they insist that all children are fully independent in the toiletting department i.e wipe own bottom, flush toilet, wash hands etc as the school wont do it properly.
My older charge(now 5.9) has been wiping her own bottom since she just turned 3 as she started pre-school at 3.1yrs.
I cant even imagine my 5yr old charge being at all happy to have me wiping her bottom now, never mind at 8
