CMs -do you use your tv much?

doing pre reg course in oct. but i am thinking of getting rid of my tv. i don't use it much. ds1 only watches cartoons on it but we really wouldn't miss it that much. the thing is, do parents expect that their dcs will be able to watch tv when being minded?

no

we have DVD afternoons during the long hols, we watch the springwatch/autumnwatch progs with Bill Oddie and that's it really

Some minders like to use tele for their aferschoolies to relax with which seems a good idea (I only have one after schoolie and they are gone straightaway so only time for change and snack before collection)

booyhoo · 04/09/2010 22:12

do you think it would be a problem for you mindees or the parents if you got rid of yours?

I don't think it would be a problem if you got rid of it

In fact a tele free environment could well be a USP for your setting

booyhoo · 04/09/2010 22:23

do you think? i am thinking i could keep it to see how much i use it but then it could become a case of using it just because it is there. i think if i ge rid of it now then it was never there in the first place as far as the mindees would be concerned, so no loss to them. does the fact that i have internet mean i would still be liable for the TV license fee?

I am a cm and i could manage without a tv. Not sure about internet and licences!

Rowrow · 05/09/2010 09:51

No licence for the internet. I would be more than happy to send my son to CM without a TV.
That is one of my worries about CM.

My son is 2 and he doesn't not watch TV regularly and it does not play a part in his daily routine. He is happy playing, being read too etc.

So for me this would be fantastic!

poppymouse · 05/09/2010 11:08

I'd love a CM without a TV! Think mine has it on in the background a lot and her kids loll about in front of it after school. Not always stuff I want my wee one to watch so I'd be delighted if it wasn't there. That said I do resort to it myself when DS has a post afternoon nap grump.

booyhoo · 05/09/2010 12:20

oh don't get me wrong, it is nice to just flake on an afternoon infront of the tv but i would be just as happy to flake on the sofa and read a book. i noticed that the cM the boys were at when i was working always had the tv on and of course because it was on, they just sat glued to it, and it was always blaring out loud aswell. she was lovely but this was the only thing that put doubs in my mind about her.

thank you all for replying, it has settled my mind about getting rid now.

My DD is with her CM for one very long day and she keeps to my routine, which includes In The Night Garden at 6.20. I like that tbh.

stomp · 05/09/2010 19:48

I have a very small tv in the playroom, it may get used at morning snack for 10 minutes and occasionally for 10 minutes during the afternoon snack- or not. Sometimes we might come across a program at snack time that sparks an interest in a topic. But I'm perfectly happy without it. As i only have under 5's here it is not really an issue (no after schoolies demanding tv to 'chill out' Grin)

booyhoo · 05/09/2010 20:37

that's good to know LTJ, i know routine is very important and i would hate to make a child feel unwelcome or unhappy because of a change in their routine.

I won't mind in the slightest if eventually the CM does her own thing. I know she doesn't much like ITNG herself and have no wish to inflict it on her Grin once DD is settled, if she wants to do something else, that's fine by me. But given that she's only 1 it seems like a good way to settle her in initially.

booyhoo · 05/09/2010 21:31

totally agree, if she has just started, she needs to feel relaxed and ITNG could be as important to her as a teddy or blanket is to another child.

apparently you don't have to have a tv licence if you only watch tv through iplayer etc. If you use any device to watch or record LIVE TV then you should buy a licence www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/what-if-a-tv-licence-is-not-needed-top12

Most parents of younger children will be delighted if you don't have a tv. I only use the tv to extend activities with related programmes (Come Outside, Something special etc) and for occasional cinema role play/chill outs.

booyhoo · 06/09/2010 22:13

that's good to know ayla. thanks for link. i am still in two minds tbh. will do a bit more thinking and see which side my head lands Grin

The reason I chose nursery over a CM is that the nursery DIDN'T have a television. My two do watch TV at home but I would assume (probably wrongly in most cases) that a childcarer with a television might be tempted to plonk a child in front of it for sustained amounts of time...

PinkChick · 07/09/2010 09:58

we have tv on sometimes through out the day say for example when one or two of the babies are sleeping and i have a loud active toddler, so we settle down with a nice cartoon for a bit of quiet time, same goes if the youngers ones wont/cant sleep, we either put a ncie calm cartoon on or put a nursery ryhme cd on and chill out.
I personally would never plonk them in front of the tv to be left to get on with it, same as i wouldnt have done with my own dd when she was young.

when dd comes in from school, 'sometimes' she asks for the tv on and that is also fine, most of the time i am giving the younger ones their dinner, so theyre all with me in breakfast room while dd gets to chill out for 1/2 hour to recharge her batteres.

However if the waether is better than today, we are hardly in so there will be no tv at all that day!... none of my parents have any problem with their child watching the odd cartoon.
