Hi - i live in SW London and looking for advice on payment rates for child minders. I am discussing with a relative to take on looking after my 10 mth old for 3 or 4 days a week, 9-5. I dont know if it's a pro-rata annulaised salary or daily rate or hourly rate i should be working from. What about holidays, should they be paid? Advice most welcome. Many thanks

As a relative, depending on their relationship to your children (such as grandparent, aunt/uncle) then they don't need to register as a childminder.

Where would they be providing the care, your home or their home?

Hi there - thx for responding. The childminder would be my sister, ie the child's aunt, and the care would be at my home. Thx, G

So they would be a Nanny (as it is care at your home) - your employee.

Nannies can be paid anywhere from National Minimum Wage to £15 gross an hour. In London £80 gross per (8 hour) day would not be unusual... could well be a lot more.

Consider how much you can afford to pay - factoring in the many costs associated with having a nanny, see Example Costs

Holidays should be paid... they would get 5.6 weeks of holiday at a minimum, you can provide more.
