I'm just starting with a new nanny, what do I need to do regards payslips etc? does she need to be an employee or can she work self-employed? Are there any other considerations I should look out for?

I should say that she was the main lady at my little girl's nursery so routines etc, we've had her for a week and she's doing great and because we've known her for a year already we are happy so far with disciplining etc. I just don't know what to do with legal stuff if there is any.

Have you got a contract in place?

For tax purposes, you'll be her employer according to this website

So you need to pay employer's tax, provide payslips which show her gross pay and her tax/NI deductions. Might be worth having a look at the nannytax website for help.

I recommen nannypaye.co.uk. They are cheaper than nannytax.xo.uk.

You are her employer. Suggest drafting the contract so that you pay her in gross, and not net so that you don't take the hit of taxes rise.

You need to provide her with an employment contract within one month of the start of the job. I suggest youmake as detailed as possible, pay SSP only (in the contract, not necessarily in practice), and pay lots of attention to the diciplinary procedure and what constitutes gross misconduct. Oh, and agree holidays up front if you can.

AND... start with a fixed term contract for either 6 or 12 months.

If you sign up to nannypaye or tax they should advise you. We've just employed a nanny and they've got loads of info including draft contracts etc.

ok cool, I'll give them a call, thanks so much for the advice :)
