Hi,
I looked after a 3 yr old and he has recently become potty trained, at my house. But will not do anything for mum and dad at home. If i ask him if he wants to go then he will try and sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't, he has excellent bladder control and can hold it in for hours. But when he's at home he just won't do anything, he waits until nap time and bed time for his nappy. His mum hasn't scared him off from doing it, I ahve done here what she has asked me to, for continuity. She is so frustrated with it, and is quite relaxed with him, so i know she doesn't force him to try, we both have the same approach.
I have been to his house today, and he has been to the toilet with me on his toilet no problem, but won't go for mum or dad. any suggestions to encourga ehim more at home, they've tried stickers and gifts, nothign worlks
please excuse typos.

be firmer

Twiglett · 26/08/2005 15:48

sorry that wasn't constructive was it?

But I think she needs to remind him every half hour and take him to toilet until he's so fed up of it he does it on his own. Use a poo chart or something .. don't chop or change.

I think she's scared to be firmer in case it scares him off. I just distract him laods and when he says that he wants to get off once he's on there, i sing to him or make up stories of change the subject. i've told her all this,\ and i know he'll ahve to do it sometime. Its just frustrating her, she keeps joking that shes goigto have to move in with me.
I think maybe because i have incorporated it into our daily routine, e.g. before snacks, lunch and going out, he knows that we all go to the toilet.
Who knows! thanks twiglett.

Hi

I have been a childminder for a short time and when mum of mindee asked me to potty train, I decided to buy a 'dolly with a potty' as well as potty for mindee! if dolly wants to use the potty then mindee will invariably want to keep dolly company! it has worked every time; so if your mindee has a favourite toy at home such as a teddy, doll or similar, maybe put teddy on the potty and see what happens.
