I've only had shocking experiences with agencies. We found our current lovely nanny through word of mouth, but I know lots of mums who've had great success on simply childcare and gumtree.

I think we are too far out for gumtree - I hear it is much better for central london but I will have a look at simply childcare.

Julie at Hawthorne's has a good reputation.

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 09/08/2010 21:42

I second Hawthorne

Julie is very good at matching famiies and nannies.

She is Harpenden based

We used Aupairka agency, very good and fast service.

Hi, tinies have always had a good and organised set up, i am talking of experience from years ago though.

Where are you in Herts?

What are you looking for? As often word of mouth is the best way.

Nicadooby · 10/08/2010 15:36

Tinies not always the most honest though, i found cupcakes quite good

Hi no she does every thing-- infact my neighbour got her mums help from her, she has alot of nurses and carers on her books that if she hasnt got one she will know how to find you one. I really like this agency, you know when you get the feeing nothing is to much trouble she goes out of her way. AND this really sold it for me she will take calls 24/7 and when says she will get back to you within an hr she will.

Dont get muddles she has too websites ones is her personal as she is a birth partner and a maternity nurse and the other is her agency that she runs with her daughter.

Laura

Hope all went well

goingbacktowork · 18/08/2010 15:47

thanks - she is absolutely lovely but she could n't help and passed us onto her acquaintance. They charge quite high agency fees so we will see if we use them. Thanks very much for the suggestion.

Deearnas staff get snapped up quickly i guess thats due to her low fees. Did she give you advertising advice she did a colleague which was brilliant. What other agency did you use out of interest and are the fees huge ? Deearnas fees are v low though arent they ?

goingbacktowork · 18/08/2010 19:01

yes they are low but not much point if she has no one at all. She is a lovely lovely lady though - funny and very interested. She looked at an advert I drafted if that is what you mean? She said it was fine. The feees for other agent are 5 times et weekly amount which could work out at about £1,600-2,500 which I think is a lot of money (on basis I have not earnt a penny yet - not yet gone back to work) and there is a sliding scale of refund fees so if your nanny etc leaves after 6 weeks you only get 10% of your fee back. I am not sure I can take that risk as we really have not got that kind of money to lose. It is a problem really.

I know she does have ladies but they get snapped up v quick but most are just covering until a nanny takes over. thoose fees are huge from the other agency, she is excellent at helping you advertise so i would get her advise

shreddiey · 18/08/2010 21:05

From Deearna that was. I have just been told by a friend to get you to put a free ad in job centre x

goingbacktowork · 18/08/2010 21:13

yes I think we are going to do that - you never know who you might find - thanks I will keep you informed of progress. And can I just recommend Deearna again to anyone that might be reading this - a really fabulous lady.
