Hi i'm just wondering if anybody can help me out! I have just accepted my first job as a live-in nanny on temp basis.
I was wondering what sort of pay I should be expecting before tax and NI.
I will be working in the South East.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Experience?
Qualifications?
Hours?
Number of children?
Where in the South-East?

Nanny salaries vary hugely depending on the above variables from approx £200 gross for a 50 hour week for someone with no experience and qualifications at all in, say, rural Kent to triple that for someone in central London doing 24/5 care holding relevant qualifications and related childcare experience.

i have 10 years experience, qualified to level 4.(nneb,nvq4)
I think the hours will be 8-6
2 children aged 2 & 3
fleet area
I will be living in during the week but very much doubt that i will at weekends.
they weill provide food etc durin the week

I would have said that would put you in the upper end salaries of 400+ gross a week.

Live in has no minimum wage

surprises me how many nannies go for a job without knowing the salary first and equally like yourself who havent agreed a salary by the time job is offered.

I am thinking with 10yrs experience you would have thought to ask salary before wasting time on interview etc.

Anyway not for me to judge but anything from £300-£450 gross

i am just about to formally accept the job and the mother has asked me about wages etc which is why i'm now asking on here? I'm only doing the job for 2 months so the money isnt a massive issue, i need work on a temp basis and the family seem really nice so the money isnt going to make me accept or decline the job, just wondering what I should be asking for

I'd also say around £400 gross - puts you at the top end if the live in scale for out of London but your background and the fact it's temp merit that.

Personally I find it odd they're getting a temp without having a wage in mind. What if you're too expensive?

nannynick · 05/08/2010 18:39

I agree with the others, you are looking at £300 upwards.
However the family may not be looking at that sort of figure... can't understand how you can get this far with a job application and have no idea of how much the parents are offering to pay.

Fleet as in GU51? I know that area well, went to secondary school there.

I am confused. This is your first live in nanny job. What is the ten years of experience in?

I personally think that if this is your first live-in job, you are probably not towards the top end of the scale. Depends what your other experience is in. Live-out nanny? Nursery? B-sitting? Wroked at a day camp?

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/08/2010 17:41

i think op meant she has been a nanny for 10yrs but this is her first live in job, therefore not sure of what salary to ask for

suprised the family didnt mention salary at interview, or that you didnt as obv VERY important, even if only for 2mths, what happens if they say wage will be £250gross so maybe 150 less a week of top end?
