I was going to take my ds (7yrs), a 10yr old and a nearly 3 yr old fruit picking on Friday. We've just popped down to the farm to find out about it while I only had ds with me. I'm a bit worried that the 10yr old will moan about the amount of walking involved as the farmer said that it was all quite spread out. She doesn't like walking that much is particularly hard to please but I'm hoping that the picking of fruit might distract her from the amount of walking she'll be doing.

So, just wanted to see if anyone had any experience or tips on how to deal with it or whether I should just wait until she's back at school and just take the nearly 3 yr old !!

Unless there is a physical reason, I'm always shocked by kids from about 8 years old upward of late saying they "don't like walking"... It just makes me . it will be good for her to walk. Can she be distracted by helping to entertain the little one? Some 10 year old girls love that sort of thing... Hopefully the fruit picking will distract as well. Strawberries are great - promise to make something delicious with them like a smoothie when you get home... Anything she can look forward to. Sorry, trying my best here. But I can't stand the lazy moaning about walking!!

She'll probably be distracted by the fruit and by you talking about anything and everything except the walking . Sounds like it would do her the world of good.

Thanks for the suggestions! I can't stand the moaning either!! I'm finding it harder and harder to entertain this one lately. Helping with the little one is likely to cause more problems, tbh. She's quite happy to be entertained by my ds though which is a bit tough on him sometimes. Everything I suggest is met with very little enthusiasm - unless it involves the nintendo ds and I can't bear being indoors all day when we have the freedom to be outside!

I don't have a driving licence so have always walked everywhere. My ds learned from a very early age that walking was our main form of transport and is a very good walker. I find the younger ones I look after are generally quite happy to walk a fair distance. Infact, it's only this one that I have any problems with. I'm dreading the next 2 days .

I like the smoothie idea - I had just thought about suggesting we make a crumble with any fruit picked but smoothies sound even better!

I know a 20 year old who was generously taken on a shopping trip with someone who offered to buy her loads of clothes. She was so happy until she realised she had to walk to the shops as she was more used to driving right up to shops. She moaned the whole morning about walking. It wasn't even far - just your typical shopping area... What is causing this?? I could understNd if she was asked to do sprints or even run for an extended amount if time but ffs walking ?? Where is this laziness coming from?

mogs0 · 04/08/2010 22:02

Ha, ha! You obviously haven't tasted my crumble before!!! I once contributed to a thread on food/recipes saying that I added coconut or oats (can't remember which) to my crumble and was as good as asked to leave immediately

Lol

ignore the moaning and enjoy eating picking and buying the fruit

if your nearly 3yr can walk, sure your 10yr can

I've been looking after the younger one since he was a baby so he's quite used to walking with me. The older one only comes part time in the school holidays and is driven around by car the rest of the time.

They managed a 30 min cycle to soft play, 2 hours in soft play, 30min cycle home then an hour and a half in the playground with only minimal moaning!!

I've suggested making crumble with the fruit we pick tomorrow and they negotiated having their own individual crumbles so they can guarantee they get the fruit they want in it .

I'm going to inform them in the morning that the words bored and tired are banned for duration of our time in the farm or they will be fined a blackberry/plum/strawberry!!

Oh that's a great idea - the berry fine Good luck! Fruit picking is a favourite activity in our family.
