about to employ an after school nanny

and have never employed any nanny before. Does anyone have a contract that will work for this?

Also when we interviewed I offered the job on a net basis as it is meant as an after school and holiday job so although most weeks will be 20 hours, school holidays will be more like 50.

Any advice on tax and contracts and holiday entitlement would be greatly appreciated.

Put the gross figure in the contract. Avoid Net figures if at all possible, as any changes to the tax code will affect how much you pay.
calculator.kistax.com can give you an idea of the Gross figure from the Net. So work out what the Gross figure would be based on Net agreed and the starting taxcode - get nanny to agree to that figure. You will need to know the taxcode though... it could be BR if they have another job. Have they given you any paperwork yet such as a P45 from a previous job?

Holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks which can include bank holidays. As the hours in the job varies, you may need to calculate holiday in Hours. BusinessLink: Holiday

I have a similar situation. Things i were told to do by the people who do my payroll were to average out the salary over the year as it saves me money on the tax and stuff.

I did set a gross amount in my contract as well, but i got nannypaye to tell me what it was. I also have a bit in there about adjusting her final salary when she leaves as if she leaves just before summer hols she may owe me money etc.

The holiday i have set in hours as it is deifferent if she takes term time or holiday time holiday and also i choose when she takes half of it.

thats all that springs to mind.

I use nannypaye (still using them now).
www.nannypaye.co.uk is their website.
Good luck :-)

where did you advertise to find an afterschool nanny? I need a solution to cover the couple of hours after school and no child minders do picks from our village school. Any ideas?

I put it on gumtree and got a great response but we live in London. One of the secretaries at work (who lives in Essex) said she found someone through netmums. If you live somewhere less central there may be local networks or places to advertise.

Shelzy - thanks a lot. Nannypaye were great and they do a price match for the other services too!
