dd unintentionally insulted nanny. Do I say anything?

This is not the biggest deal but advice still welcome.

Our new nanny started yesterday. I work from home and just heard dd2 (3) with her saying "why do you have a big tummy? Is a baby in there?"

Nanny is 51, so am pretty sure no baby. She is also not huge, a tiny bit overweight but certainly not obese. She said maybe she ate too many sausages.

Do I apologize to our nanny or do I just leave it? My instinct is the latter, if I worked out of home I wouldn't have heard after all but she is new and brilliant and I am utterly terrified of upsetting her

Leave it. A nanny won't be upset by a child saying what they see. Why put her through the indignity of having attention drawn to her fat tummy again?

foureleven · 27/07/2010 10:16

as ananny she's used to it im sure. dont embarrass her.

ViveLaFrak · 27/07/2010 10:17

Leave it. As nannies we're pretty accustomed to our charges pointing out our least flattering features. Children can be very honest and if nanny cared she'd probably have told your DD2 that no, she doesn't have a baby and it's not nice to point out things like that because it might make people sad!

I would pretend you didn't hear. If really you want to show some kind of solidarity wait until your DD says something unflattering about you and share it!

Thanks guys, glad my instincts were correct. Great idea to share something unflattering about me, there are plenty of exampls

Don't worry. DS (5) recently told our nanny she was his servant. And then proceeded to (attempt to) order her around.

I did however call him out of the room on the spot and make him go apologise to nanny.

Tavvy · 27/07/2010 14:36

I've had the servant one
My personal favourite was being told I wasn't as pretty as mummy because mummy goes away and has lots of things done that make her pretty and I don't.
Out of the mouths of babes

mrsshackleton · 27/07/2010 15:01

Love that Tavvy

Sadly I have no time to make myself pretty during nanny time, I just sit at my desk and mn work

Agree leave it

I've been told by ex dc when changing for swimming that my boobs were smaller then mummys floppy ones lol

surpriseme · 27/07/2010 19:41

leave it.the nanny will understand(and if she doesnt she is in wrong job) that its just a child being a child
I was joking with my 3yr old charge the other wk and saying i was going to eat all the cakes.she turned round laughing and said 'you cant eat all the cake because you are already too fat' lol

Simplyme · 29/07/2010 21:40

Def leave it, I'm sure your nanny is well able to cope with comments like that and has already forgotten it. I had a nanny friend who was quite a lot overweight. At a party a boy was quite rude to her and asked her why her tummy was so fat? She replied it was because she ate a naughty boy who was rude to her! Needless to say the boy was not rude to her ever again

smupcakes · 30/07/2010 00:13

My charge was cuddling me last week and then looked up at me with a strange look on her face.

She said, "you know, under your arms you smell just like Mummy.... Yuck!"

MummikinsOopNorth · 30/07/2010 16:39

Just leave it, i'd say. If nanny has worked with or had children before, it will be water off a ducks back.

I remember once being in a car with all of DP's family, having just met them, and his little sister, then age 4 (was a big age gap between them!) piped up "Cooor [Mummikins], you're a bit fat", I just burst out laughing and everyone laughed too.

gorionine · 30/07/2010 16:42

Your Dd is 3? I am sure your nanny will not be offended by it.

LOL @ Simplyme!
