What do CM's charge per hour?

Am considering returning to work and am looking at all options for childcare for my two year old. Is there a big cost difference between a CM/nursery? I am clueless about all this!

CMs are generally cheaper, what they charge depends on the area of the country - I'm £4.50 an hour in the South East.

looneytune · 26/07/2010 14:11

Best thing to do is look on this website, put 'childminders' in your search and your postcode and that will list local childminders and their prices etc.

looneytune · 26/07/2010 14:12

p.s. I'm £4.30 (all inclusive i.e. food, nappies, outings etc.) and also South East. But it can vary even within the same town so really is best to look in the area where you'd want the childminder.

And do check what their fees cover - my CM is cheaper than looneytune, but I have to supply nappies, for example.

Thanks guys, that gives me a good start point.

turnitup · 27/07/2010 20:27

South East - £4.50 (under 5's) and £5.00 for after schoolers.

ChildrenAtHeart · 28/07/2010 00:08

I'm £4.00 ph (South coast) including all food and outings but not nappies. I charge more for Term Time only contracts but no retainers for school hols. I don't charge if I'm not avail (eg sick, hols etc)

londondee · 28/07/2010 12:04

Thanks Loonytune for providing that link. When I do a refined search for my area, I still get lots of results. I could contact them all, but I am quite anxious to get a childminder sorted asap for mid-Sept so looking to do things as quickly as possible. Does anyone know where people normally advertise for childminders? Thanks if you can help.

brazenhussy · 28/07/2010 12:16

£5 per per hour here in North West.
I am the high end of the scale here though but I justify it because I only charge for hours attended not those contracted or booked.
Also no charge for unexpected child non attendance (sickness, days with grandparents etc)or holidays, theirs or mine

JenniPenni · 28/07/2010 12:49

£6.50 an hour SW London - includes all but nappies and wipes.

MoonUnitAlpha · 28/07/2010 12:54

Londondee - if you call the Family Information Service they can give you a list of CMs with current vacancies in your area. Here is the list of numbers, you can find your local one.

JustAnother · 28/07/2010 14:10

If you work long hours, the nursery might be cheaper. It was for me, plus they were always open. With childminders, if she is ill, you can't take the child in so you are stuck.

londondee · 28/07/2010 20:05

Thanks for that, MoonUnitAlpha, I'll call my local ones tomorrow!

actonchildminder · 29/07/2010 08:15

I'm in Zone 3 and charge £6 an hour, nappies and wipes and baby milk not included, everything else is.

K75 · 30/07/2010 14:31

£8 an HR, that's nanny rates
