Hello again!

Not for me this time, but a good friend of mine who is absolutely lovely and has just finished her degree in Childcare, one focussed on 0-8 year olds.

She's having a peek into the idea of nannying and is wondering how much she should expect and for some advice on nannying in general. You've all been a great help to me so I though you may be able to help her too.

What sort of rate should she be aiming for? She's found a prospective job with 3 children (ages currently unknown, I'll update) and is curious about a rate there. Also, what should she look into contract wise? I've mentioned her being an employee so they pay tax/NI, and looking at gross/net wages and trying to avoid 'bad' jobs, what else is there?

Thank you in advance!

Get her onto Nannyjob to adapt their sample ANA contract which is a fairly good starting point.

Has she any nannying experience? Where is she looking at working? Degree tends to get you a rise of abotu £1/hour on a level 3 qualification but then you balance that with presumably limited expereince and you might be back where you started for other nannies her age. Live in or out? What kind of hours? All that will affec the rate.

My advice would be to interview thoroughly, make sure she agrees a trial period and be sure that she wants to nanny before she goes into it. Yes it's a fabulous job but there are some PITA bits. Lay them on heavy and try to put her off if she still wants to do it then fab!

Aha! Sample contract, thank you! I was trying to think of what she'd need in a contract.

No nanny experience, minimal MH experience with the degree but plenty of childcare experience (though that was part of the course too, two days a week in a setting) and she's very passionate about working with young children. Genuinely nice girl and very mature for a 21yr old (most of the time anyway! ), would be live-out as she's moving in with her OH shortly, looking at 12 hour days to bring the income up until she's experienced enough for a better wage I think. Most of the jobs she's seent hat have wages set on them say £350 for 12 hours I believe. The other's say negotiable so she's unsure of what to suggest as a wage.

I thought £7 gross would be okay? For myself I'd say £6-7 gross in the Colchester area (min wage being £5.85) and she has a degree and a lot more experience with little'uns than I do. Maybe I was just being greedy! (Still have people contact me though!)

Thank you for the advice I've spoken about all of the nasties with her before and the good bits when I was looking after two older kids, so she knows it can be a bitch! The only bad thing about it is now I am quite jealous! Lucky cow has better connections and therefore better opportunities than I had when I was looking for work and already has her degree! :P

I really think she would make an excellent nanny with some experience and I will be trying to fob jobs from her when her charges get too old for normal nannying I'm sure
