Do things like this just happen?

DS (6 months) and I went to a settling-in session at the childminders last week. She had a 1 year old mindee there and two older ones who normally come after school but are there all day during the holidays. As the childminder was letting us in the front door the 1 year old crawled out of the back door and hurt herself as one of the older ones had left the back door open. The childminder had a word with the older child and said he said should know not to do that. The 1 year old was ok but I was pretty horrified. I imagine that accidents like this do happen, but what do you think? Should she have more safety measures in place? She really did seem to be the best childminder available and is very well thought of but I'm having doubts now.

to be fiar i had a woman come for an interview and t meet my two girls, they played up something rotton, my daugher was throwing a tantrum and managed to headbut th potential mindee in the eye and then headbut the wall, she hadnt ever ever playes up like that before! luckily the mother came for a second visit! and agreed that i was indeed a good minder.

yes, they do just happen. If your child goes to a child minder there will be other children around and he will not always have the entirety of her attention because she will have to spread it between others. That's why they are a third of the price of a nanny.

i would say that this do happen in a split second and maybe the older ones were outside she was in with the little one and when she went to open the door to you the little one was playing ok, the bigger one maybe came in to get something then ran out leaving the door and the little one has just went straight to the open door , all very quick while she is just opening the door to you. i would say it wasnt her fault. maybe she could have taken the we one to the door but then she knew she wouldnt be long and didnt think that the back door would get open and little one get out as it was shut when she left. and normally she would have more than one little one she cant possibly take them all to answer the door

Accidents do happen and it was unfortunate that it happened whilst you were there but in reality accidents happen to our children in our own care too and we are meant to be better than any childminder.

She probably felt uneasy about you seeing it knowing she would be judged but I would put it down to an accident.

these things happen in any home with more than one child. i've used childminders, nannies, day care and been a sahm - accidents have happened in every setting, and little children are notoriously good at doing the last thing you expect.

i bet she's mortified. by the time your ds is 1 and crawling, i bet he'll have done something similar in your tender care, lol

I would say this was a good opportunity to see how she deals with situations like this - did you think she dealt with it appropriately? Was the upset baby reassured by her presence?
