Who pays for nanny's first aid course?

Hi guys, just wanted to ask your advice. My nanny's first aid certificate has lapsed, and she (and we) are keen for her to get it renewed.

My question is, is this something that we (her employer) should pay for?

I think so, but I think it's reasonable to ask her to do it at the weekend - so that we're not stuck for childcare arrangements.

Or is it something that she should pay for, and we should either give her holiday or let her do at the weekend?

Just wondering what other people have done!

I had to do one, on the weekend as that was all there was, it was before I started working for them and they paid for my time and the course.

If you are paying the cost of the course (it can be over £100 these days) then reasonable that you ask her to book a weekend course.

As a nanny, I pay for all my own training and arrange such training outside of my working hours. But that's just the way I've always done things.

My employers paid for my first aid course as part of registering for OFSTED but I did it at the weekend in my own time and was not paid for the time

I paid for the course but asked them to do it at the weekend. It was necessary for Ofsted reg. I did not pay for the time spent doing the course.

Those nannies who've had it paid in the past would be hacked off if you didn't pay, whereas there are also those who would organise and pay themselves without thinking twice. Your particular nanny may have certain expectations that you need to know about, before you go in with theories about what the standard approach is (which, IMHO, varies hugely from area to area, nanny to nanny, family to family).

I organise and pay my own. Without it my insurance (not required as not OFSTED reg) probably wouldn't be valid, I had it when I started the job so I should keep myself up to the same standard and I do it in my own time.

If parents want to contribute or pay me for the time then I am more than happy with that, but it's not required or expected as far as I'm concerned.

Then there are nannies who assume that because they did a course once they still know it all, don't need to refresh and would expect their employer to pay if said employer wanted them to refresh their knowledge.

If she can't get a weekend one I would give her holiday though, as you're keen for her to renew.

i pay for mine but have the one day course but if mb/db wanted me to become ofsted registered and NEED the 2 day course then i feel they should pay

always done it at weekends

I paid for mine. I also did it during work hours (my charges are all at school so I could - was during time off). I only did it for work. Would have been nice if my boss had offerred to pay for some since it benefits her.

I pay for my nanny. I would be horrified if my employer expected me to pay for all of my CPD, and so I try to treat my nanny with the same respect and care that I expect of my own employer.

Do as you would be done by, and all that. It's not as if there are gerzillions of courses for nannies to do, are there.

I think it depends entirely on who wants her to get it. If she wants because she thinks it will look good on her CV and help her career progression, she should pay. If you require her to get it for your job, then you should pay.

I guess if you both want it, then it would be fair to go 50/50. And one way of going 50/50 would be for you to pay and her to go on her own time.

I paid for our nanny to do one - and I went with her. It was on a saturday and it was actually really nice to spend the day with her.
