do nurserys have to ensure children wear sunhats?

reason i ask is that it was our nurserys sports day today and was VERY hot and sunny in am (tho pissed down in pm)

and although my dc had a hat, there were maybe half the class who didnt (children are 2/3/4yrs) and many were fair

there is a spare hat box there, so i was rather suprised and annoyed that they didnt make the children wear hats

or is it the responsibilty of the parent/nanny to make sure they have one

we make ours wear them

they have their own but if they dont we have a spare box too...

they are school sun caps and protect their necks / shoulders too

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/07/2010 19:52

thats what i assumed nannyl

i know some nurserys cant apply cream but surely they can ensure that a hat gets worn ESP as there is a spare hat box there and when SO hot and sunny and running about doing races

Our nursery applies suncream (that we supply) every hour in hot weather!

They don't let them go outside without a hat either.

PandaG · 14/07/2010 20:40

we don't allow ours out without a hat when sunny, I go round slapping spares on heads if they forget when they go outside

re suncream, as we are only 3 hour sessional care we prefer it if cream applied in advance p takes ages to thoroughly apply to 20 children, but will reaply to particularly sensitive skin if parent supplies cream and requests application

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/07/2010 21:52

so MUST a nursery make sure children have a hat on as part of eyfs/safety/common sense etc

not sure why this is pisses me off but it does

My 3yr old charge's nursery sent a letter home requesting that children take a sunhat and a consent form to sign to allow them to apply suncream which parents supply.

PandaG · 14/07/2010 22:12

I don't thin kit is a must - as in explicitly laid down by ofsted/EYFS, but I would say would be failing in their duty of care if did not ensure children protected.

I take and wear a sunhat myself at the slightest glimmer of sun so the children see me leading by example

cazzybabs · 14/07/2010 22:15

I don't think there is any legal law...and I guess if its a sports day maybe the nursery assumed the parents would...however there is an obligation of care...I would cross if my child came home sun burnt... but equally I teach year 1 and I do not have the time to esnure they all have suncream applied - I do remind them and model but I don't apply it to them. I do make sure they all wear their hats (if they have one)

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/07/2010 22:15

duty of care

yes thats the words i was looking for

we were in field for over 2hrs in blazing sun

no there is no law or regulation say that we have to make children wear a hat.

as a minder, I am astounded constantly at the parents attitudes towards supplying adequate clothing in accordance with the weather.

MrsTicklemouse · 14/07/2010 22:55

I was really cross when I picked DS up from nursery early (11:45am) the other day to find him outside without his hat despite the 'all children must bring a hat' poster on the door, his was on his hat peg so it's not like he'd thrown it off, which we wouldn't he tried to wear it to bed the other day .

It was 30c, he's 2, really fair and still has 'baby' hair

xoxcherylxox · 15/07/2010 07:02

i am a childminder and do put hats on the children if the parents bring one but the children wear it for so long then through it off and i contsently am picking hats up and telling them to put it back on. im surprised that parents sat there for 2 hrs and let there child not wear a sun hat surely has most parents were there it was partly there fault as well as the nurseries

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/07/2010 21:46

true parents fault as well

but as children were in care of nursery (9-12) they should have insisted

just as the children i nanny for I make sure they have cream and hats while in my care/working day

just as cheryl the cm on here does

Our nursery policy - Kids not allowed in the garden without a hat when it is sunny. If they remove their hats they have to go indoors. Parents also sign a form to allow the application of suncream, which is done periodically throughout the day as necessary.
