Help what do we do?!

hi there.

Two weeks ago we spoke to a lady at the stay and play. She used to be a childminder and was giving us advice. She suddenly turned around to us and asked for our phone number as she said she would need someone to look after her 3 children. 2 of them are schoolies and the other is about 1 years old. Term time only. We said we were happy to that and she said that she would get back to us when she got a job.

Yesturday she phoned us up and asked how things were going. We told her that our crb's haven't come back. She wants us to possibly look after the children from September. She wants to get the older 2's opinion about the place so we have booked to see her and the children on the 27th.

What happens if it turns out that she does want us to look after them and the crb's don't come back in time? What do we do about a contract? What other paperwork will we be missing? (morton michel)

I know we will be unable to look after them here but it might be a possiblity to look after them at their house. Do we need a crb for that though??

Also this is our first interview. I have a list of the sort of things that we need to ask but what paperwork do I need to get prepared? I have our portfollio nearly sorted as there are some bits I need to change a bit. I need a parents pack right?

It's all so confusing!

No hun you don't need to be registered with anyone to provide care in the child's own home, I would suggest you call Ofsted for further advice on this topic 0300 123 123 1.
They won't be able to help with contractual matters.

You will not be able to care in your home until the CRB is complete and you are registered with Ofsted.

Who is we? You and another co-CM?

Insurance-wise get temporary nanny insurance to cover you working in their home. You don't need to be registered with OFSTED to do that unless she wants to pay you with vouchers or tax-credits.

Contract: write your own - there's a sample one from the ANA/Voice on the Nannyjob website suitable for in-home care.

Paperwork - you'll need to get your policies sorted (I think Bromley have a list) and child information sheets.

The only issue with working in their home is that you 'should' be doing it on an employed basis. As a CM you're self-employed. You will need to be very careful when writing the contract etc that you cover yourselves for that as it's her who could get in trouble if HMRC suddenly swoop down and decide you're working as a nanny and therefore employed.

How far through the registration process are you? Is it likely to be done in the next 6 weeks?

oh sorry yes the we is another cm being my husband. we are going to be doing it together.

We have been told by ofsted that if one crb/registration comes through before the other one then we can start the childminding as long as the other one is supervised. So at least that is something.

We have got the policies sorted although there is a couple of mistakes that I have to sort out. Got to sort out the child information sheets. Are they something you would normally get with the morton michelle pack?

Other paperwork I have to sort out is complaints folder and attendance? is that right? Any others? Oh accident book?

Sorry for writting out what is going through my head. Sometimes it helps to share it so we make sure we have got it right.

We have had the Ofsted registration visit which went very well. We put in the CRB's 3 weeks ago. I'm asumming that my husbands will come before mine because he hasn't changed his name or changed his address as much as me. But I know it's the time where all the schools have put there CRB's in too for the new term teachers etc. So I know I it's a busy time of the year.

Being a nanny I have no idea what MM send their CMs but a child info sheet is relatively simple to sort out.

Name, dob, address, emergency contact details, health issues, any 'special' objects or routines and anything else you want to know.

Complaints, register and accident book definitely. Visitors book, maybe?

Slightly at OFSTED's interpretation of the CRB coming back as I didn't think they registered you before everyone over the age of 16 in your house had been checked. Still...

EmMum06 · 15/07/2010 10:50

Hi Sandym3g,
OFSTED will not register you until everyone in the house over 16 has had their CRB checks come back. my husband and i sent ours to CRB at the end of May and are still waiting.

pippin26 · 15/07/2010 11:08

you can't start childminding in your own home until you have your certificate up on the wall, I'm afraid, so even if your CRB's have come back you will have to wait for the certificate to come through. you will also need your insurances in place

Sandym3g · 16/07/2010 22:26

Found out today that our CRB's are at stage 4 which is good but that is the longest part right?

my CRB has been at stage 4 for the past 6 weeks. i checked with crb and after 8 weeks (which will be july 19th) they can contact the police to make my checks a priority but each check is different.

a friend got a letter from OFSTED at the beginning of july to say that she got her registration but is still waiting for the certificate.
