After school nanny - how to find!!

I posted here a while back speaking of my dilemma - no after-school club and childminders in the area won't pick up from this school.

We have been exploring getting an au pair with experience in childcare but it's proving hard and of course, you can't generally interview in person!

We looked for an after-school nanny (possibly with own child) but when I placed an ad on the nannyjobs site I got just one reply. Do after-school nannies really exist and if so, where is the best place to advertise for one?

try local netmums childcare board
also an advert in a local shop may find someone local to you.

Your best bet will be a nanny with their own child who only wants to work part time hours, but they probably won't be willing to do it if the hours are too late (ie after their child's bedtime IYSWIM).

Or, you can try a university student who is studying an early years setting or some such, but you run the risk that they won't be able to do every day (unless they are distance learning).

Yes after school nannies do exist. I work as an afternoon nanny caring for 3 children. In the holidays I take my own child with me.

Like chitchat07 says the best bet probably would be a nanny with own child.

It works for me and my son loves coming with me in the hols.

Could you try a local nanny agency although I appreciate there would be a cost involved.

Good luck and hope you find a nanny.

Do you have a local gumtree?

MammyT · 13/07/2010 13:58

Thanks all - you have given me hope! I have tried gumtree already with no success but will try another agency I think. (The first was rather disparaging and told me to hire one full time).

As an aside, I'm happy for a nanny to bring her own child as I think that would enhance the arrangement in many ways.

Thanks again..

You should try Tinies www.tinies.com I know they find after school Nannies for parents.

Good luck!

Another vote for students, not necessarily childcare student as after school hours suit most. Gumtree is great in my area although you need to be specific about your needs to deter the unsuitable applicants eg specify a minimum age. Incidentally this time of year hopeless for students but try again in late August and you should get plenty of interest.

Not sure where you are, but have you tried here

You can post your requirements and may get responses from nannies and childminders. I think you pay a small fee, but only a few pounds.
You can also then look up childcarers in you area and email them.

We have used this site to find registered childminders.

May also be worth asking your school directly - ours put a notice in the weekly newsletter as so many were looking for after school help.

From experience, you will probably need to offer a reasonable amount of hours to someone to make it attractive. Are you looking for 3-7 or more like 3-5.30?

Can you team up with another family that maybe needs help in the mornings? This worked for us.

gizzy1973 · 13/07/2010 22:25

where abouts are you? I am looking for after school hours where I can take my son and havent found anything but its probably the area I live in

MammyT · 14/07/2010 21:59

We're looking for 3-7 though in reality it would be 3-6.30 but we'd rather pay to have cover than risk not having it.

We're in North London gizzy.
