Advice on the going rate for a babysitter?

How much do you pay your babysitter? My DD3 is 18 next month and wants to do some babysitting to gain experience outside her family as she is starting a cache course in Sept with the ultimate goal of becoming a nanny.

She has been babysitting her sisters since she was 14 (they were 9 and 11) and now she has been babysitting her brother 16 months since he was 6 weeks old.

She has had a reply on netmums for a babysitting job nearby and she doesnt have a clue what to ask for (neither do i as its been a long time since i had one!)

if she wants to get the experience outside family then i would ask the woman what she is offering to pay and accept it whatever to get that exp iyswim

saying that i would go by nmw and for her age £4.83 so ask for £5 ph

if the woman wants to pay more then fab

live in manchester and pay £20 flat fee. Usually home by 12, if I'm drunk or later give more.

leave out chocolate biscuits for me to have later and drink, tea and coffee.

Both sound fair, She was looking for a little Saturday job to so she could get some pennies but there is nothing about at the moment - im hoping this will give her an extra £60 or so a month as we can only afford 30 pocket money and she doesnt get EMA, she loves babies and children so it seemed like a good idea to advertise given tht she is going to do the course related to it in Sept.

i used to get £6ph when i was 18 that was 7yrs ago in greater london

Shirleygoodness · 12/07/2010 22:50

I pay £5ph for a 17yo or 20yo to look after my 3 children, from 3 to 8 years old. Friends pay that or just £3.50 in the case of one friend to 15 year old for 3 aged 3 to 10.

All the babysitters I've ever used have played dumb on rates and made me name my figure, darn them.

rosieposey · 13/07/2010 13:11

Hmmm maybe £5 per hour is a good rate for her to suggest if she is asked how much she charges - £3.50 an hour if she were younger but i reckon £5.00 seems about fair.
