vomiting in labour - does everyone?

I am quite phobic about being sick, and really really hate it. Quite a few ladies on MN seem to refer to being sick in labour at some point. I was just wondering if this is inevitable? Were you all sick whilst giving birth? Thanks!

No - I wasn't sick and don't remember feeling sick. I don't know if I had an anti emetic, I don't remember it being mentioned. I had every drug except pethadine/diamorphine.

notnowbernard · 08/03/2012 21:52

have never chucked up in labour (3 DC)

don't generally vom though, tbh, so maybe that's why?

mrssweetpotato · 09/03/2012 07:54

I vomited all over the side of the pool Grin

first1 · 09/03/2012 07:56

I puked all over myself, the bed, the MW and anaesthetist and then every ten minutes for several hours. I felt as light as a feather when dd arrived after all that puking. Every cloud Grin

TheCountessOlenska · 09/03/2012 07:59

I didn't. I did feel a bit queasy at moments but I'm not really a "sicky" person (I hate it too so I think I have trained myself out of it!)

I had gas and air and it didn't make me sick.

feedthegoat · 09/03/2012 08:07

I wasn't.

I didn't go into hospital until 9 and a half cms dialated after 18 hours of labour and I cooked and ate tea after 12 hours. I had pethadine and gas and air too so it seems I did everything that could make you sick too!

I've given birth twice and didn't even feel slightly sick!
The gas and air just makes you feel immediately drunk but I found that disappeared quite quickly.
I really wouldn't worry too much.
Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Pancakeflipper · 09/03/2012 09:47

First time didn't even feel sick when in labour.
Second time I felt queasy and told the MW. She gave me an injection and I was then fine.

CaptainHetty · 09/03/2012 10:01

3 labours, never felt sick at all. Not sure if the pain relief has an effect on sickness, but all of mine were gas and air.

becstarlitsea can sympathise, was so horrendously sick all way through my pregnancy with my daughter it was almost a relief to not be feeling ill for once...

TimothyClaypoleLover · 09/03/2012 10:19

Not a "sicky" person at all but was sick twice in labour. Once after first puff on gas and air (was sick on DH's shoes which was very amusing!) although thankfully was able to persevere with gas and air after that and didn't feel sick. And second time was when MW forced an energy drink down me to rehydrate me as I hadn't really eaten or drunk much for over 12 hours.

It is not like being sick when you are ill, it just happens and is over with in seconds and you have got more important things to focus on.

NichyNoo · 09/03/2012 12:27

I vomited from about 5cm up until the point I gave in and had epidural at 8cm. DH was really concerned but doctor said it was my body's response to being in such agony.

FeedZombieEatSmartie · 09/03/2012 12:30

I vomited immediately after my waters broke. It was quite sudden, hadn't felt nauseous beforehand.

Think its down to the individual really.

ItsOkItsJustMyBreath · 09/03/2012 15:55

No, I wasn't sick or nauseous at all. I am extremely emetophobic and, like you, I was more worried about that than the pain of giving birth. I was given a cyclizine injection at the beginning of labour and I had g&a as the mw said that as long as I didn't overdo it I would be fine, she was right.

Please talk to your mw about this as there are options available and good luck, you WILL be fine x

PestoPenguin · 09/03/2012 16:02

I wasn't sick in any of my 3 labours and wasn't nauseous at all either. I don't know if it's relevant, but I had absolutely no urge to eat or drink in any of them either, so didnt.

lilmamma · 09/03/2012 22:47

I was only sick after no4,and i think it was due to the gas and air,i had a cup of tea,and threw it all back up striaght away,it looked like i had poured the tea back into a sick bowl..

but during labour i was fine.

RockinD · 10/03/2012 20:53

1st pg I had horrendous ms for the first 5 months allied to low BP.

2nd pg not a hint of nausea or sickness throughout.

Two labours, one hospital, one home, G & A with both, no nausea or vomiting at all and second time round I'd eaten a three course meal 9 hours into a 13 hour labour (because both me and MIL thought I was having Braxton Hicks!)

D

RedHotPokers · 10/03/2012 20:57

No sickness or nausea in either labour, and never actually sick whilst pg (although a bit nauseous).
In labour I did find that G&A made me feel a bit queasy so I stopped using it and was fine (although obviously in pain!).

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 10/03/2012 21:00

I did, during transition.

Mumof1plustwins · 10/03/2012 21:03

With FB I had no morning sickness or labour sickness

With DTs I was sick once (DH was driving so might have been car sick related)
And some nausea
No sickness in labour but I was sick after labour but that could have been down to not being allowed to eat till they were born in case of c section (they took 24hrs!) no c sec but I tried to eat a sandwich after birth and brought it up, managed to hold down my toast though.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 11/03/2012 10:17

Nope, I didn't vomit with either birth. Smile I'm not a sicky person generally though. I did think I was going to with the G&A with DS1, and spat out a lot of saliva, but that was it.

Morphiates can make you chuck, though - after an ERPC, when I was given diamorphine (I think) for pain post-op, I threw up spectacularly once at home. Apparently more likely to have been the painkiller drug than the GA.

thistlemuncher · 12/03/2012 06:51

I did with DS, not with DD. (but then before DS I used to vomit every month when I had my period so assumed I would in labour too). 2.5 yrs on, I've still never made our pre-labour menu again..!

Scrow6346 · 14/03/2012 22:31

I am a fellow emetophobic which provokes anxiety and I am on Medication for this (seroxat) this is the only thing stopping me getting pregnant due to my fear of being sick in public - and therefore fear of morning sickness and vomiting in labour. My question is have any fellow suffers been through pregnancy and childbirth and can give me an honest opinion on how they managed or didn't cope as the case may be? But also has anyone been in seroxat whilst pregnant and did it cause any issues? A would really appreciate any response. Many thanks Smile

Pudden · 15/03/2012 21:01

I vomited with dd (1st dc) once not long after arriving at hospital but no more after that.

Didn't with ds (2nd born)

not a sicky person though- no morning sickness

FrozenNorthPole · 15/03/2012 21:30

I'm emetophobic. Didn't throw up with their birth. Felt like I was going to at the post-birth tea and toast stage on both occasions ... which I belatedly realise was probably related to the syntometrine injection (although might just have been body in shock after 90 minute labour with number 2). With number 3 I shall be having a natural 3rd stage. Grin
