Fast easy birth #1 = same again for #2?

DD was a fast, relatively easy birth (11 hours from first twinge to baby, at home, in a pool, no major aftereffects for me). What are the chances of something similar happening with DC2?

I know there is any number of possible things that we need to take into account, but if I'm lucky enough to have a straightforward pregnancy and no special requirements, does a fairly easy first birth automatically follow to a similar second experience? I know there will be plenty of people who had it differently, but is that the most likely outcome?

I guess what I want is someone to say "The stats show that second births are 75% likely to be the same as first births" or some such

Dd1 was 2 hours from start to finish but not an enjoyable experience. Dd2 was 20 hours but a much nicer labour/birth experience. Dd2 was back-to-back and once she turned it was very, very quick (less than 30 mins) so I guess had the positioning been better it would have been fairly similar.

DD1 was about 11hours start to finish; DS was 8 hours start to finish.

DD1 was 7 hours from start to finish but was induction. DD2 was 1hr 10mins from first contraction to delivery. Contractions started at 2mins apart and I nearly delivered her in the car on the way to the hospital 45mins away.

Don't know the exact stats! But I would say the chances of it happening again are high, especially if you continue to be fit and healthy and choose the same conditions to birth in as before. I'd say 11 hours is more "normal" than fast. Hopefully next one will be a 6 hour blissful experience!

Can't count on it of course. There'll be plenty of people out there who've had 2nd births worse than their 1st. But the chances are good, and there are plenty of things you can try to encourage it too.

Thanks all so the general gist is that things are likely to be similar - that's good enough for me

smilehomebirth - I was comparing to the experiences of friends, many of whom had 2-day labours that ended up with interventions and painful results

Interested to know if your friends were planned homebirths also? .

I was comparing to my MIL who's first (also a homebirth) was 6 hours - I just don't think that's particularly unusual for an un-messed-with, don't-have-to-go-anywhere sort of birth. Then again I don't actually think 2-day labours are unusual either, hey ho! My Mum's first (also homebirth) was a 24 hour job. I guess I wouldn't have mentioned it if you'd put "relatively fast"

Sorry for being picky!

dd1 from 1st sign to birth 5 hours

dd2 45 mins!
