Question for those with a history of short labours

suiledonne · 06/07/2010 20:34

I had a 4.5 hour labour, first twinge to delivery on dd1 and 2 hours from first twinge to delivery on dd2. My MIL also had VERY short labours each time (as in under 3 hours)

If you had a short labour did your mother/DP's mother have similar?

Just wondering as my SIL has just announced her first pregnancy and she is hoping short labours run in DH's family and her baby will deliver as easily as mine did and MIL's did.

She thinks maybe it is something that is influenced by the baby so could come from either parent IYKWIM.

Not very scientific I know but interesting all the same.

Thanks

My labour was 1hr 50mins from first twinge to baby. I do know, from having had two sweeps, that I had been 2-3cm dilated for at least two weeks and I'd been having low level cramp in my legs for a week or so.

My Mum's labours were beween 40mins (no' 4) & 5hrs (no' 1). She always says she has what she called 'slow labour' or 'leg labour' which is period like cramping, for a couple of weeks before hand, and she reckons that does most of the work.

On the the other hand my sister was in labour for 18hrs before ending up with a section...so it could just be a fluke.

No, mum and MIL had average-length labours (although my mum's one-and-only labour was an induced breech vaginal delivery after her waters went).

My only spontaneous labour, however, was 90 mins from first twinge to baby. Previous labour was induction lasting 3.5hrs. I think I just dilate early and fast.

My mum was in labour 52 hours with me (1st baby) and 16 hours with my db. Not sure about MIL but she said both hers were quite long. I was expecting a long labour because of the family history but had ds in 3hrs 45mins from first twinge! I had been drinking a lot of raspberry leaf tea though.

I had a short labour with DC1 (under the 3 hrs), midwife (& everyone else) told me to get to hospital ASAP if I were to have another. When DC2 arrived I went in with contractons 5 mins apart and was sent walking as things were taking ages, in the end midwife did AMR and then DS arrived 1.5hrs later.

Point is that the 2 labours were different. With DC1 I had waters breaking before labour, DC2 I only had leaks from hind waters. DC2 was also bigger!

I had quick ish labours with mine ds 2.45hrs dd1 2.30 dd2 1.15hrs dd3 waters went had one contraction and within 6 mins of waters going she was on bedroom floor! wasnt even fully sure i was in labour dont even know exact time she was born weird but that still bugs me

treetroppo · 06/07/2010 22:40

my two births were 2 hours and 1 hour -my mum's were 2 hours ( me) and 1 hr ( my brother).

my waters broke with a pop with ds1 and ds 2 gradual leak. ds 1 9lbs ds 2 8lbs.

my mum was born in a cab on the way to hospital - in other words suggesting her mum had precipitative labour too.

my ds 2 born at home should there be dc 3 would definitely stay at home again.

(ex)MIL - don't know, not especially 'bad' that I know of.

mum - on the quicker side of average.

me - ds1: 2hrs from 1st contraction / ds2: 15 mins from 1st contraction.

I do know that my maternal grandma had her 5th v v quickly!

FloweryBoots · 07/07/2010 10:28

My Mumm had pretty quick labours with all 6 of us (not sure just how long but she always says the were quick and I know my older brother, 2nd child, was an hour old before the midwife got there so it really can't have taken long!). Younger sister has had 2 pretty quick labours, about 4hrs and 3 hours I think, but my older sister was in labour for 48 hours or more and then the did a CS.

I'm hoping I get the quick type!

KnitterNotTwitter · 07/07/2010 11:53

My DS was quick-ish - 7hrs and I've always been convinced I could have done it quicker if I hadn't taken on WAAAY too much gas and air... i spent about 3 hours away with the fairies and not concentrating on the job in hand.

MIL considers that she had the longest and most hideous birthing experiences known to woman each of her 3 times.

nunnie · 07/07/2010 20:29

Just over 2 hours with my first, my mother had very quick labour with both me and my sister. And my sister has had a quick labour with 3 out of 4, 1st was quite long, last was minutes under 2 hours.

Have no idea if it is a family thing though.

IveStillGotIt · 08/07/2010 12:08

My Gran was just over an hour with my mum (her first), just over 2 hours with her 2nd and about 4 with her 3rd.
My mum was 1hour 15mins with me (her first, induced), 2hours with her 2nd, and 3hours with her 3rd (also induced).
I was induced, and the first 6 hours were really mild, not even as bad as period pain twinges every 10-15 mins, the boredom was worse than the 'pain' if you could even call it that. Then the 'proper' labour started, and it was like one constant contraction, which lasted an hour, then 15 mins pushing him out!
So I think quick labours must run in the family, I hope im just as quick if I have any more DC!!!

mungogerry · 10/07/2010 09:00

My labours have all been under 2 hours (3 labours - one elective section), my mums (2 children) and my MIL's (3 children) were all under 2 hours too.

Happy quick laouring!

LittleSilver · 10/07/2010 18:34

How on earth would your MIL's labour affect yours?

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 10/07/2010 18:40

My first labour was about 3 hours. My mother had longer labours, and my MIL had planned C-sections so never experienced labour.

suiledonne · 10/07/2010 18:47

Thanks for all the replies.

Might be something in it after all.

LittleSilver The baby has both sets of genes - mother and father's so SIL is hoping it could be passed through the baby.
So from MIL to her son to the baby.

Never said it was scientific did I?
