Types of C-section scars...need some help!

Hi,

Much much much against my will, I have a c-section booked in a weeks time! My baby is breech and doctors definitely ruling out a natural birth

Anyway, I've always loved my belly, so I now have to get my head around the fact that, besides having to deal with a post pregnancy body, I will also have a scar...and I'm freaking out!! Call me vain/frivolous if you want!
I know my child will make it all worth it but still, I'm sad!!

So, I'm looking for what's the best option for c/section scars...there seems to be different options like staples or stitches?

Any opinions or experiences? all welcome!!
Also, has anyone heard of a type of glued scars? apparently there are no external stitches...

What LeonieDeit said.

I have a CS scar so fabulous that people were complimenting it when I was still in hospital
It's now a very pale pink line, down by my public hair. You have to look very hard to see it.

Don't worry, honestly - it will be fine.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 03/07/2010 20:41

You will get scarring however they put you back together unfortunately and if you are like most women you may well have an overhang of skin and a crepey tummy. It's just what happens, the scar does fade a bit eventually and by the time your baby gets here it really won't be important anymore.

For the record I had staples and they do leave a mark for a bit but now you wouldn't be able to tell how I was put back together, I just have a nice, neat greyish scar. I do mourn for my flat tummy sometimes but so what? I am a mother now and there are far more important things in my life than a flat, unblemished tummy! My lovely big breas-feeding boobs for instance!

PlasticCenturion · 03/07/2010 20:42

I had one long stitch with a bead at each end that they just pulled out in one go.

You would not know I have had a cs. Honestly, I am not lying to you. And this was an emergency, get her out quickly job. It's well below the hairline and even if I remove the hair that low, it's a very, very thin, very unnoticable unless you're right there looking for it, very white line. Only about 4 inches long. I swear to you on all the gingerbread in the known universe, you CANNOT see it.

Please don't worry.

PlasticCenturion · 03/07/2010 20:43

Yeah, the crepey skin however...

PlasticCenturion · 03/07/2010 20:46

Here

Googled and mine's a bit like this but a wee bit harder to see than that.

spula · 03/07/2010 20:49

Crepey skin far worse than scar for sure!! I have had 2 cs, last one only 4 months ago and scar visible only if you really stare (not that you really would stare there though ) Much more staring going on at my lovely dc

I had staples (epidural didn't work and I was screaming every time she tried to stitch me, so staples were quicker), which were removed 7 days after.

I thought I looked like Frankenstein's monster while they were in, but now (3 years later) everyone that's seen the scar (gynaecologist, midwife etc) has said what a beautiful scar it is. It's right down at my pubic hair, only about 6-7cm long, and so thin and pale you're hard pushed to see it at all.

I find the stretchmarks and baggy skin far worse to be honest!

LolaKnickers · 04/07/2010 10:21

Very faint silvery line, very low down which would be hidden by hair if I didn't wax so "thoroughly"! It's barely noticeable anyway, only if you really look. Had dissolvable stitches.

It was an elective section, don't know if that makes a difference (they may have to cut faster and with less care if it's emergency?)

moaningminniewhingesagain · 04/07/2010 12:43

I had the wire with beads the first time, was horribly bruised due to major rush job and very wedged baby.

Had traditional indivual sutures with second, looked a lot more untidy tbh and more sore to remove. However, AFAIK which stiches/wound closure is used will depend on the surgeon, as they have their own preferences so I wouldn't get too hung up deciding what to ask for

Scars hardly noticeable at all, my belly is no worse than before the children really (still quite podgy but has always been the same)

ivykaty44 · 04/07/2010 12:48

I have a wiggley line across my lower belly - I had a crahs c section so no time for neatness - had clips which ws fine for coming out a week later.

I had a vbac dd2 so never got the line neatened up with a 22 c section as my other friend did - -she had crash c section and then elected and they neatened her up.

i have two holes either side no as further surgery they used my belly button and c section scar to aviod further marks and scars

differentnameforthis · 04/07/2010 13:28

My scar from 2003 had faded quite considerably before being reopened in 2008.

I has staples in '03 & internal stitches in '08. Thye had to removed a little at the end of the scar, but it came away quite easily.

PixieCake · 04/07/2010 19:16

Those of you talking about crepey skin - is this something unique to having a c-section or do you get the same with a vaginal birth?
Thanks

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/07/2010 19:20

My scar is still quite raised and pink, but I do have keloid skin. you really have to peer through my pubes to see it though.

PlasticCenturion · 04/07/2010 19:40

Crepey skin is from pregnancy. Not every woman gets it but it's fairly common I suppose. Once the skin stretches that much to accommodate a whole person, it often can't go back to its normal state.

Even Julia Roberts has it.

DomesticG0ddess · 05/07/2010 11:08

Love the Julia Roberts pic, hurrah!

DomesticG0ddess · 05/07/2010 11:09

Although she is about 10 years older than me .

PlasticCenturion · 05/07/2010 11:18

It's such a lovely pic. She looks stunning and happy. I do recall the DM and its vile commentary on how she should cover up (twas linked on here iirc) and I silently applauded her for looking that good after having twins and for not giving a rat's arse about whether other people thought she should dress a certain way.

DomesticG0ddess · 05/07/2010 14:00

Yes, she looks great. Hate the DM anyway!

bigstripeytiger · 05/07/2010 14:08

I had staples. I wasnt asked, that was just what I was given. They were fine. In for 5 days and then removed.

The scar is fine, I have had 2 CS, and have one thin white line, which is at the same level as the rest of the skin.

I have crepey skin, which I think is just a pregnancy thing, rather than a CS thing. I also have an overhang, which I think is a CS related problem.

The scar is nothing really, is isnt noticable, and its in an area where I dont have too many people looking anyway

goodlifemummy · 05/07/2010 16:15

No crepey skin, tiny overhang and can only see the scar if staring, 5 years on and it you struggle to see it! And I had twins!

DomesticG0ddess · 05/07/2010 20:15

Forgot to add that scar is barely noticeable (3.5 years on), but I do seem to have scar tissue above it, like a bit of a ridge no matter how flat tummy is (as flat as it's going to go anyway, though I did have a gallbladder op before Xmas and was pretty thin and scar was the same). Don't know if this is normal, perhaps not from the other posts. I had stitches with beads at the end which were removed painlessly by the health visitor. I need to have the right knickers, that sit above the scar, bought some recently and they lay right on the scar and with the raised bit it's not comfortable.

neshi · 06/07/2010 16:48

Thank you all for the answers!!
Seen the OB today and he told me they rarely use staples, which is great!!

Well...sit and wait now!

Thanks!!
