Those that have had an ELCS ....How long was your hospital stay?

I am trying to get an ELCS but I am not looking forward to the hospital stay.

When I had DD I went in at 9pm saturday night and got discharged tuesday 11.30am. This was after traumatic forceps delivery with no pain relief and then too much pain relief (too late) for stitching up. Couldn't walk for 12hrs.

Hated every minute of my stay.

This is really beginning to worry me and is making the birth seem an ordeal already.

48 hours- all was fine, and I was desperate to get home as it was DC1's birthday!

Btw, had emcs with DC1 and was home in 48 hours too!

It can be very different this time round- you will have oodles more mental and emotional energy for starters.
Hope all goes well

both born around midday.
out with both 48 hours later.

TennisFan · 25/06/2010 16:10

DD was born early Monday morning, and I think I didnt get home until Thursday. Although should point out I had managed a private room with ensuite, and so was very relaxing; hardly saw anyone for those few days.

mumtoblaire · 25/06/2010 16:14

Thanks

48hrs doesn't seem to long I suppose. I feared it may be a 5 day thing.

Due date is 11th August. Schools return 16th August. If get a section I think it may be at 39wks as was day early with DD. so this may be round about 4th/5th August. What do you think chances are of being able to walk DD to school. All going to plan of course, best case senario. School is about 2 mile walk there and back.

I went in on the Sunday afternoon for overnight monitoring (I was Insulin controlled GD) Had my section at 3pm on the Monday, and was let home on the Wednesday.

strandedatsea · 25/06/2010 16:19

Hmm, I would have said a good chance of you walking to school as long as you take it easy. Start with short walks a day or two after you come home and slowly build up.

Good luck with the bith - my birthday is 6 August, it's the BEST day to be born....

PS don't they normally schedule elective sections a week early? They did with dd1 who was breach; I tried for a natural birth with dd2 but got to 11 days over and gave up.

mumtoblaire · 25/06/2010 16:22

Thats what i thought. 11th August is a wednesday so don't know if they would book wed 4th or the Monday 2nd.

Have to wait and see.

Had low lying placenta at 20wk scan and booked for third scan at 34wks so I don't know if that will be a deciding factor.

My elcs was Thursday afternoon, home Sunday afternoon.

I hated my 6 day stay post forceps last time but found it so much more manageable this time. Knowing what to expect helped me to cope much better mentally and emotionally. I took a ton of snacks and my MP3 so I felt more in control of my immediate environment.

My elcs was at 39 weeks exactly.

Shaz10 · 25/06/2010 19:09

I had placenta previa and went in at 37 + 2, had him at 38 +2 and went home 4 days later. It could have been 3 days but I was still in a lot of pain.

If you have placenta previa you may have to go in earlier just in case you go into labour.

I was in three nights for my ELCS with my first baby. I would have liked to go after two nights, and would push for this next time. There was a girl in the bed opposite me who had had a tough vaginal birth, and I was up and about and in a much better physical state than her. Anecdotally, it seems an ELCS is easier to recover from than an EMCS.

mungogerry · 25/06/2010 22:23

Hi Tia,

I had an ELCS for a breech.

I had the section at 4:35 on Saturday afternoon and came out Morning morning after doctors rounds.

5 days but could have pushed for 3 but didn't want to

Great hospital, much like a hotel, lovely nurses.

Pingpong · 26/06/2010 16:36

2 years ago I was kept in for 3 nights but this year there was a policy change and I was kept in 2 nights, I could have stayed longer if I felt I needed it but I wanted to go home and see DD1. The lady in the bed opposite stayed 5 nights 7 years ago and was at the thought of going home after 2 nights so she chose to stay longer...

Pingpong · 26/06/2010 16:38

oh and
"Anecdotally, it seems an ELCS is easier to recover from than an EMCS."
Sadly this was not true for me. I had a smooth, problem free recovery after EMCS and have had a few problems after ELCS.

mumtoblaire · 26/06/2010 17:23

Thanks everyone for your imput.

I eventually went and bought a bag today so that i can think about packing. Just in case.

i have my ds by ELCS at the rosie in cambridge last year, where they are now offering 24 hr discharge for mums who have had a ELCS. It was wonderful! he was born at 9.55am on the weds and was home by 2pm on th thurs so not quite 24 hrs but only one night on the ward and then home to our lovely comfortable bed at home! bliss!

EightiesChick · 26/06/2010 20:14

4 nights, but partly because DH had to work and couldn't get me out earlier. I could have gone after 3 and I have a complicated medical history. So I would think 48 hours is certainly possible.

MarkStretch · 26/06/2010 20:16

Had DS on the Tuesday morning, discharged Friday lunchtime. Would have been Thursday lunchtime but had problems with my blood pressure.

However, I was glad of another day in bed.
