Hypnobirthing book/CD recommendations please

I'm 34+3 and have read so much good stuff about hypnobirthing on here that I'd like to give it a go. I don't really want to spend the money on a course but I gather that the CDs are good for drifting off to sleep to if nothing else, and should help me approach labour in a positive frame of mind. There seem to be loads of different things on Amazon and I have no idea what to buy - anyone got any recommendations?

I have the natal hypnotherapy birth preparation CD (Link here)

Not had the baby yet but it's very relaxing if nothing else!

Hi, I'm 31+ 4
Try the natal hypnotherapy CDs, they are much better than the hypnobirthing.

Hynobirthing is american, and tries to get you into the frame of mind that there will be no pain!!!!!

Hypnotherapy is the British version, so British sounding on the CDs and it is much more relaxing.

I have tried both and prefer the hypnotherapy.

Good luck

Thanks both - I didn't realise there was a difference! Have ordered the CDs you linked to, imkeepingmum.

This is absolutely not true! HypnoBirthing helps people understand that birth needn't be hideously painful, long and difficult, that it can be calm and in control. We (I am a teacher) NEVER teach that it is pain free!!!!! I don't know where this myth has come from? but it's not true!!

HypnoBirthing also produce and anglicised book - it is the one with the blue and white cover, it is written solely for the UK.

If you are looking for CDs and MP3s I'd really recommend Mindful Mamma, they're very good and much cheaper than a lot of others. www.mindfulmamma.co.uk/mindfulmamma-CD

I agree with childrenchildren I used the Marie Mongan hypnobirthing book & CD to prepare for the birth of DC3 born last week. I am now evangelical about it. It was an amazing birth: really calm and mostly pain-free. Totally manageable sensations apart from the last 20 mins or so when I lost my focus. Such a change from my previous 2 births.

And the CD was guaranteed to make me drop off to sleep within minutes

Good luck with whichever one you use - and believe me when I say that it does work.

I am currently reading the Marie Mongan book (the anglicised one) and think it is brilliant. Unfortanately I can't find anywhere to buy just the CD? Any thoughts? It seems to only be bundled with the US version of the book?

poguemahone · 20/06/2010 20:52

RunningGuerita I'm in the USA so have the American version. If that's any use to you, I'll happily post you my CD if you have no luck getting hold of one.

RunningGuerita · 21/06/2010 09:44

poguemahone That is a very generous of you. I am actually from the US originally so not fussed about the American accent! I will PM you.

RunningGuerita · 21/06/2010 09:46

poguemahone do you have the CAT facility enabled? (Contact another user). I am new to all of this so need to set that up.

poguemahone · 22/06/2010 03:37

RunningGuerita American? Isn't that a happy coincidence! Marie Mongan sounds just like Betty White, which I find strangely comforting.

I've been on here for years and I've still not worked out the CAT thing. You could just email me your address at peellywally at gmail dot com and I'll post it to you.

RunningGuerita · 22/06/2010 08:37

Thank you very much. I am a bit of a faux American, so I actually have no idea who Betty White is! I'll have to ask my Mom.

GentleBirth · 22/06/2010 19:45

Hi everyone,

There's also the GentleBirth program which is a 5 week homestudy course and comes with a book, 3 CDs (additional Mp3s) and online support forum) Some Mums prefer a more structured course.

Natal Hypnotherapy (the english version) also has a great book to accompany the CD which lots of people are saying great things about (ie on amazon reviews). It is called "Effective birth preparation - your practical guide to a better birth" and gives masses of practical tips and advice on all aspects of birth - not just hypnosis

mum295 · 13/01/2011 17:45

Agree with what others have said about the Natal Hypnotherapy CDs. Used them for preparation for and birth of DD and they were fab.

japhrimel · 13/01/2011 18:59

Natal Hypnotherapy was fabulous for me during my nightmare labour of failed induction, days of early labour and eventually a CS when there were issues with the anaesthetic. I didn't think hypnobirthing was for me and think that it wouldn't have been as useful in the far from ideal situation I found myself in.

lilly13 · 14/01/2011 08:23

Ladies, have any of you taking hypnobirthing courses? I was on another thread and some people said that reading the book + listing to the CD was not as affective as taking a course. I was wondering if any of you gave birth on the basis of book/CD and hypnobirthing worked for you?

Btw, you can get Marie Mongan CD off amazon (can order it from the US version of amazon)...

BootyMum · 14/01/2011 09:10

For my first birth I did a hypnobirthing course with the Marie Mongan CD and book. I found it helpful to a certain degree in that I felt reasonably calm throughout the birth. However I was shocked at the intensity of and pain of labour and don't think hypnobirthing prepared me for this. I was instead lead to believe through classes and book that it would be almost pain-free. I feel that the book in particular is very evangelical in stating that you should have pain free labour if techniques followed correctly which made me feel a bit rubbish that birth was not as I had hoped or imagined [although was medically straightfoward and had healthy baby].

However now I am using the Natal Hypnotherapy CD course at home and so far I feel this is much more my style and very relaxing.

lilly13 · 14/01/2011 10:02

thanks, Booty! who is the authoror of your natal hypnotherapy CD? good luck with the delivery!
