Should I be worried about Group B Strep?

Hi,

I am just over 36 weeks and recovering from a nasty urine tract infection caused by 2 different types of bateria so I am told. As well as needing to wee every 20 mins I had a temp and was nauseaus and had funny discharge and it sent me a bit doolally too.

I need to give a new urine sample on Monday to see if it has cleared. Been reading lots of scary stuff about Group B Strap but NHS don't seem to check for this. But in this case maybe they will?

Have read that GBS can cause urine tract infection and antibiotics maynot completely clear the infection from vagina and therefore it could potentially pass to baby during birth and in some case it is very serious.

Should I insist on a test, would it be easy to go private for a test? I am also hoping for a homebirth in water!

Am I worrying too much about this. All info on internet seems a bit confusing to me.

Thanks

Your GP will test if you ask her/him - it's a quick swab. I think there was a study whoch showed no difference in outcomes between the US, which does routinely test, and the UK, which doesn't.

But if you're concerned, ask your GP - mine did it there and then. Takes 2 mins, quick vaginal swab and results in a few days. That said, I was 39 weeks + with dd when I asked - results only just in at 40+1 when I was in the delivery room!

I think it's £35 for the test privately and yes I would have it.
My friends little girl got it and nearly died at 10 weeks, so they did test in her 2nd pregnancy and again the baby did have GBS and spent a week in hospital.
Just not something I would want to be missed personally.

The risk factors are baby born before 37 weeks, premature rupture of membranes, and a labour over 12 hours.
