Frimley Park or Royal Surrey in Guildford?

Just moved to the area and got a BFp! Before I can book in with a midwife at my GP's, I have to confirm which hospital I will be giving birth in. I need to book in earlier than normal as I have a pre existing medical condition that requires additional monitoring throughout the pregnancy.

Can anybody help with any of their experiences of the above?

Both hospitals are fairly equal in their facilities.

Which one is closer?

I had a very good experience at Royal Surrey twice, for ds 5 years ago and dd 3 years ago. I had c-sections both times so had to stay in for longer than normal, and got very good care.

I think Frimley is closer by about 5 mins! So no real discernible difference in terms of distance.

Thanks TuttiFrutti - its hard to know what to do at the best of times but especially when you have just moved to the area!

I had dd at Frimley Park 2 years ago and I thought it was excellent. There were loads of midwives on the post natal ward and it was a good experience. Congratulations on your bfp!

Do they still do tours of the hospital? I had one when pregnant with ds 5 years ago but have a feeling they have stopped them since. If available, this will give you a feel of the place.

Having said that, a lot depends on which midwife you happen to get on the day, which is all down to luck.

The Royal Surrey was excellent in terms of nursing care. The food was pretty terrible, but I think that's probably true of most hospitals.

I had DS at Royal Surrey 2 years ago. Induction because of being overdue ending in a c/s. I had a good experience and was well looked after both during labour and for the 4 days following the op. The food was terrible though, tuttifrutti is right. All of my NCT group also spoke very positively about Royal Surrey. No knowledge of Frimley though.

I have had two children at the Royal Surrey. One almost 3 years ago and one 12 weeks ago. Both times brilliant.

Thanks all! I wouldlove to say you have helped me make my mind up but as you have given great reviews for both, you haven't

I think I will try and take the tours and use that as my final decision maker.

Thanks again.

Hi
I've had babies at both - ime, the Royal Surrey was better but then my experiences were very different.

DD1 and DS were both natural births at Frimley and my experinces in labour were excellent.
DD2 was an ELCS at the Royal Surrey

My dd1 was born at Frimley after a long but natural labour nearly 7 years ago in a very busy September, when after she was born, I was dumped on the ward, unable to reach my baby despite having numb legs etc. Everyone was really busy and I couldn't wait to get out.
With DS, I was only in the hospital for 4 hours and then home!

With DD2, I was on the very quiet post section ward for 24 hours which was just great. The staff were fantastic and really helpful, even when I asked to move to the Grange for my post natal care.

Food at both were just cack!

When you have your tours, quiz them both on usage of the pool, ie how often it is used if you think you might want to use it. I have heard that the RS use it very rarely as the midwives don't like using it. That might help sway your decision, if it's something you are interested in

mummytime · 07/06/2010 21:16

I had both mine at RS and if my consultant was still there I would recommend it. I did appreciate the cup of tea after birth. I'd always heard good things about Frimley too.

I quite liked the food at Frimley, but that may just be because I didn't have to cook it myself AND someone delivered it to my bed where I could MN and eat in (relative) peace. DS slept a lot in the first few days
