Hi,
Had an episiotomy with DS, 2 yrs in July. Had pain/uncomfortable feeling since. Throbbing pain just before period, pain with sex.
Saw G.P who referred me, but what is likely to happen? Anyone experienced similiar pain. Very nervous about it and could use some support!

From what I've heard (and read on here!) this is a very common problem which is most definitely treatable. I had a 2nd degree tear 7 weeks ago and was worried it hadnt healed properly and was told by my gp I needed the scar re-doing. Saw obs consultant who said they can do a minor op which involves re-doing the scar (sounds bad I know) by cutting and re-stitching. A day surgery job too so no having too stay in hospital.

In my case consultant told me I don't need a repair as its purely cosmetic though I'm still thinking about having the procedure done.

2 years is a long time too be in pain, good luck with your referral.

Thanks veryveryworried. Two years is a long time, kept putting it off thinking it would improve!

Thanks again.

Hi dribbleandworse, I have had a tear and 2 epi's, my scar used to be sore/throbbing during period, dd2 is now 3 and it has gone,

When I told the gp he said it shouldn't be sore so much blood flow to region you shouldn't even see a scar

So just offering support, mine has gone and actually couldn't ell how long it has gone for and only realised when I was having this same discussion with SIL, so think it is more common than gps realise

oh and I can't recommend using vitamin e oil on the scar enough, I rub a little on the scar each night (even though I hate touching the scar, freaks me out a bit but needs must!). Its meant to be really good for reducing scar tissue and generally stretching the area, a very helpful mumsnetter recommended it after using on her scar and I really do think it helps.

After my third degree tear I had a lot of pain with my scar tissue during sex and was told that sex would actually help stretch the area and make it less painful, I think theres some truth in this as well, as the more I did it the less sore it got.

I used oestrogen cream from the GP on my episiotomy scar after two years of pain and that helped. Its barely noticible now (seven years after birth) except in certain positions (sex).
