Possible for contractions to be at top of bump?

Quick question for you all, I'm 40 weeks tomorrow and I've been getting pains at the top of my bump. The baby's head is well engaged according to my obstetrician, but when I get these pains my entire bump goes rigid and it feels as though the baby has run out of room and I find it hard to breathe. The pains are lasting about a minute, but not in an established pattern or anything. The baby also stops moving around this time, which is unusual because he/she is very active ordinarily.

I ask because I haven't had any period like pains at the bottom of my bump yet, but there is a lot of downward pressure which makes sense as the head is engaged. A nurse said that it is possible for Braxton Hicks to be at the top of the bump so I am worried that I could be missing real contractions. Reassurance anyone?

contractions start at the top of the bump and wave downwards.

Ditto Eccentrica. Is where it started with my 3!

Thanks for replies! Do you mean that you felt them only at top at first? Or that pain started at top and moved downwards during contraction itself?
