The os is the opening in your cervix, so your cervix had not started to open up when your mw examined you. However, your cervix being soft and not hard is somewhat favourable. I think the other measurements refer to your cervix's dimensions. Wouldn't worry too much, these things can change quickly...

your cervix is like a long tube and the inside of the tube (the internal os) was closed. soft refers to the feel of the cervix and as puddock says soft is better than hard! pp-2 refers to the presenting part (I assume the baby is head down so it will be the head) and it means 2cm above the ischial spines of the pelvis, 1cm long refers to the length of the cervix (the long tube as explained above).

Thank you for the replies.

I think that makes sense - though the ischial spine thing is a bit confusing!

Does this mean it was a favourable sweep?
(feeling a bit lost in the dark today - sorry)

your cervix is ripening.. it is soft and a little shorter.. if she attempted but could not do a sweep then it is not favourable... if she could get a fingertip in and sweep you, then taht's is better

did she give you any other feedback?

how many weeks are you?

Lulumaam · 25/05/2010 14:23

the ishcial spines is a way to measure engagement and descent..c&p'ed this

"implemented a new classification system that divided the birth canal into 11 stations according to the position of the fetal head in cm relative to the ischial spines (−5 to +5). This corresponds to the average distance between the midpelvis (level of the ischial spines) and the outlet (level of the ischial tuberosities). For clinical purposes, the 11 stations have been divided into 4 groups: ?high? (−5, −4, −3, −2, −1), ?mid? (0, +1), ?low? (+2, +3), and ?outlet? (+4, +5) (ACOG 1988). This is the most common method now used and has been adopted for guidelines by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (R.C.O.G.)"

-2 means baby not really engaged. but not as high as it could be !

that all sounds good.. your cervix can change v v quickly .. sweeps tend to work better when you are over your due date so don't be disappointed if nothinghappens yet x
