i had a baby boy 7 months ago and had an epsiotomy, however after i was in alot of pain - and no one seemed to no why i was in so much pian, anyway it resulted in oral morphine every hour for the 5 days i was kept in and then 2 weeks worth of codeine tablets so i couldnt feel the pain. Now me and my husband are trying for another baby and i just wanted to no if i have to have another episiotomy will they cut in the same place??? as im worried i will have all the pain again! the labour was fine but afterwards i was in soo much pain trying to move that my husband and the nurse had to help me move from the bed can any one help please??? x

Go for a section - episiotomy from what I understand increases (and I am no expert so speak to a consultant) the chance of a tear is subsequent labour.

I had a 3rd degree tear and you really do not want that. A third degree tear equals stress incontinece and diminshed sexual feeling at best - prolapse at worst.

oh blimey that doesnt sound good can i opt for a section tho?? its all healed now an u cant even notice it but the pain after was terrible so im just scared i'll have the pain again if they do it again?

I think you probably have grounds -

Have a look at this book.

Furious, that sounds dreadful, but is not always the case.

I also had an episiotomy and a third degree tear (DC1). I was stitched by the consultant and rattled with god knows how many AB's and painkillers!

But I was absolutely fine after two weeks. No continence problems ever, no issues with sex (waited about 8 weeks, but genuinely felt very little difference) and no pain at all after those two weeks.

DC2 was a very fast labour and whilst I did tear (only 2nd degree), it was fine. Honestly!

It may be worth getting checked out just to make sure any previous stitched have fully healed and all is well?

Good luck

I had an episiostomy first birth , healed really well and quickly. Next birth a tiny little tear that healed by itself, no stitches.

LillianGish · 10/05/2010 19:56

I had an episiotomy first time, not so much as a stitch with ds - who was twice the size!

Northernlurker · 10/05/2010 20:16

Well i've had three episiotomys and from everything I've heard it's much better than a c-section! Two of mine were down the same line and that last was on the other side because of the position I was in at the time. Op - yours really shouldn't have hurt so much and a c-section would very likely hurt MORE. I think you need to talk to your midwife about why you had the epi, why it hurt so much and what can be done to minimise the chances of recurrence.

yummymummie1 · 10/05/2010 20:44

northern lurker- thanks i agree im not reli a big fan of a c-section unless needed i had the epi as for the last 6 weeks i had weekly scans and they said he wudnt b bigger than 5lb 4 an his heartbeat was irregular on the ctg and towards the rnd his heartrate was droppin so they tried the suction cap but it didnt work so decided to do a cut an forceps delivery but all of the ppl i spoke to (midwives and dr/surgen) didnt no why i was in so much pain one of the doctors said it may have been that it went through the muscle? but wasnt sure so i was just constantly dosed up on drugs which numbed me and after 2 weeks when they ran out i was fine however the pain was that bad to start without that at one point b4 i was given the druga i was so much pain i cudnt reli speak i was jus cryin which is why i am so worried abut it happening agen. x

Here's a positive story for you:

DD1 - episiotomy and tear
DD2 - tear only, no need for epi

Both times I was stitched by a consultant and took a lot of care to rest and everything healed up 100% fine with no issues.

It's less likely you'd need another one with your second as your body has 'stretched' before.

Another friend had episiotomy for DC1 but needed nothing for DC2 and DC3 no tears, nothing. So it can happen.
